Position of the identification 

For vehicle models 170, 202, 203, 208, 210, 215, 220, 230, 463 an identification plate is located on the fiber optic cable wiring harness behind the radio (A2) on which the respective fiber optic cable modules (1, 2, 3, 4) installed specifically for these vehicles are recorded with their exact lengths.

For model 129, 414 the identification plate is in the trunk near the

CD changer (A2/6)

For model 168 the identification plate is in the front passenger footwell in the area of the control unit box. If there is no length specification on the identification plate, the respective fiber optic cable module (1, 2, 3, 4) must be removed and the required length measured.

IMPORTANT Vehicle model 163 does not have any identification plate.

IMPORTANT In the event of repairs, the individual fiber optic cable modules (1, 2, 3, 4) can be ordered with the corresponding length specification.

Routing 

The inserts (5, 6) of the fiber optic cable modules (1, 2, 3, 4) may only be routed as in series production. The fiber optic cable modules (1, 2, 3, 4) must always be equipped with a protective cap when routing. The sequence of the components in the digital data bus ring (D2B) is bindingly specified for every vehicle model. The connection is performed with the fiber optic cable modules (1, 2, 3, 4). They are secured to a wiring harness with an orange-colored casing.

Do not kink fiber optic cable modules (1, 2, 3, 4), route them over sharp edges or bend them to radii smaller than 25 mm. Tractive forces on inserts (5, 6) may not exceed 65 N.

Otherwise damage of the fiber optic cable (1, 2, 3, 4) may occur and this must be exchanged.

The fiber optic cable modules (1, 2, 3, 4) may not be exposed to temperatures higher than 85 °C or lower than -40 °C. Do not crush fiber optic cable modules (1, 2, 3, 4), meaning do not press together using clamps or cable ties.

Connection between the devices 

The D2B ring connects the new generation of radios or COMAND (monitor) with CD changer (A2/6) (USA preinstallation), telephone and cell phone. The sound amplifier remains wired as before with Models 129, 170, 202, 208 and 210. The radio (A2) or COMAND takes on the master function as the head unit (HU) and also forms the interface to the Controller Area Network bus Class B (interior) (CAN-B) (for vehicles with multifunction steering wheel).

IMPORTANT The sequence represents the current maximum equipment. If special equipment (SA) is omitted, the corresponding item is simply deleted, resulting in a new ring sequence.

Read out actual configuration using STAR DIAGNOSIS 

As of September 1999, it is possible to read out the current actual configuration of a functioning D2B ring using Star Diagnosis. This is important above all when subsequently expanding the D2B ring and when retrofitting D2B components, e.g. telephone.

In the diagnosis system there is the menu item "Retrofitting D2B components". Under this menu item, the current actual configuration of a vehicle can be read out and written back immediately as a new specified configuration. The process is self-explanatory.
