Remove/install brake pad on floating brake caliper - AR42.10-P-0160GG

MODEL 461 up to model year 2014 with disk brake at the rear axle 

MODEL 463 (except 463.270/271) up to model year 2013 without CODE 979 (Special protection version) with disk brake at the rear axle

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
DANGER Risk of poisoning  from swallowing brake fluid. Risk of injury  from skin and eye contact with brake fluid Only pour brake fluid into suitable and appropriately marked containers. Wear protective clothing and eye protection when handling brake fluid. AS42.50-Z-0001-01A
NOTES Brake fluid notes   AH42.50-P-0001-01A
NOTES Notes on repairs to brake system   AH42.00-P-0003-01A
1 Unscrew the cap on the brake fluid expansion reservoir and suction off some brake fluid IMPORTANT In order to prevent the expansion reservoir overflowing when pressing back the brake pistons.  
2 Remove wheel-and-tire assembly    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE     AP40.10-P-4050G
INSPECT Check     
3 Check lining thickness of brake linings (4) and check condition of brake disks    
      AP42.10-P-4251G 
    REFER TO MAINTENANCE  
    If the brake linings (4) are worn beyond the permissible wear limit:
↓
Replace brake linings (4).
If the brake disks are worn beyond the permissible wear limit:
Replace brake disks.
 
4 Remove retaining spring (1) on floating brake caliper (2) IMPORTANT If installed  
5 Remove screws/bolts or guide pin (3) TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA42.10-P-1002-17B 
    MODEL 461
up to model year 2014
with disk brake at the rear axle
MODEL 463 (except 463.270/271)
up to model year 2013
without CODE 979 (Special protection version)
with disk brake at the rear axle
 
6 Remove floating brake caliper (2)    
7 To relieve load on brake hose, secure floating brake caliper (2) to vehicle free of tension NOTES
Do not detach brake hose, and do not tension or kink.
Otherwise the brake hose will be damaged.
 
8 Remove brake linings (4) IMPORTANT Dispose of the brake linings (4) as special waste. The local authorities can provide information regarding whether disposal is also permitted as industrial waste similar to domestic waste.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Only complete sets of brake linings (4) approved by Mercedes-Benz may be installed.
 
9 Press piston back in floating brake caliper (2) SPECIAL TOOL Resetting device Figure
CLEAN Clean     
10 Clean floating brake caliper (2) using brake caliper brush NOTES
Do not damage dust boots.
This can otherwise lead to dust and contamination, which could prevent correct operation.

11 Install in the reverse order    
INSPECT Check     
DANGER Risk of accident  when commissioning the vehicle due to a lack of braking effect when the service brake is operated for the first time after repair work. Before starting the engine, actuate brake pedal several times until pressure is built up and maintained in the brake system. AR42.10-P-0100-01A
12 Press brake pedal several times and check brake system leaktightness   AS42.50-Z-0002-01A
IMPORTANT Firm resistance should be noticeable at the brake pedal.  
13 Check fluid level in brake fluid reservoir, and correct if necessary    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE Hydraulic brake system - check fluid level, correct if necessary   AP42.50-P-4210G
