MODIFICATION NOTES

7.5.04 For accident prevention and safety reasons emergency tensioning retractor units may not be activated; furthermore these units may not be handed over to scrap dealers for waste disposal. In Step 13, "Render emergency tensioning retractor unit unusable" has been removed.  
REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
DANGER Risk of injury  caused by performing testing or repair work on airbag or emergency tensioning retractor units. Store airbag units with deployment side facing up; do not expose to temperatures greater than 100 °C. When working on these units, disconnect the power supply. AS91.00-Z-0001-01A
DANGER Risk of injury  caused by release of spring in the automatic belt retractor. Never disassemble automatic belt retractors. AS91.00-Z-0002-01A

DANGER Risk of explosion  caused by oxyhydrogen gas. Risk of poisoning and caustic burns  caused by swallowing battery acid. Risk of injury  caused by burns to skin and eyes from battery acid or when handling damaged lead-acid batteries No fire, sparks, open flames or smoking. Wear acid-resistant gloves, clothing and glasses. Only pour battery acid into suitable and appropriately marked containers. AS54.10-Z-0001-01A

4 Fold rear seat down forwards    
5 Push the cap for the seat belt guide bracket (1) upward and remove it    
6 Unscrew nut (2) from seat belt guide bracket (1) TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA91.40-P-1005-01C 
7 Remove cap from belt end fitting (3)    
8 Remove bolt (4) from belt end fitting (3) TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA91.40-P-1001-01C 
9 Remove side wall lining Model 463.243/245/246/249/323/333 up to production period 31.5.04,

10 Remove bolt from automatic belt retractor (5) TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA91.40-P-1006-01C 
11 Disconnect the electrical connector at the left rear (R12/6) or right rear (R12/7) ETR [GUS] squib

12 Remove automatic belt retractor (5) IMPORTANT Noise in the inertia reel during seat belt retraction is caused by operation. The only available response to negative customer feedback regarding unacceptable noise levels is to replace the seat belt assembly in its entirety.
IMPORTANT On no account should oil or grease be used to help eliminate noise.
IMPORTANT Automatic belt retractors (5) may not be opened, as otherwise the warranty is rendered null and void.
IMPORTANTInstallation:  Note different versions (left and right) of inertia reel.
 
IMPORTANT Assessment of airbag and belt tensioner units in accident vehicles IMPORTANT If the seat belt with emergency tensioning retractor is replaced, the defective seat belt with the emergency tensioning retractor must be disposed of properly: AH91.00-P-0006-01B

13 Install in the reverse order

15 Read out fault memory IMPORTANT Stored faults which may be caused by removed cables or by a simulation, must be processed and erased in the fault memories after completing the work.  
  Connect STAR DIAGNOSIS, read out and erase fault memory   AD00.00-P-2000-04A
