Location
The reversing camera is located over the license plate number at the left, in the trunk lid's handle strip.
Task
The backup camera does the following:
- Records surrounding area to the rear of the vehicle
- Reading in of signals
- Evaluation of input factors
- Actuation of components
- Output of signals
Records surrounding area to the rear of the vehicle
The reversing camera is an optical parking and maneuvering aid. Its tasks include a surrounding field recording of the rear driving area, the generation of dynamic guide lines and the sending of the video picture to the COMAND controller unit (A40/3).
The pictures recorded by the reversing camera are processed accordingly and electronically corrected for distortion for display in the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8).
The reversing camera is supplied with voltage by the rear SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/2).
Reading in of signals
The input factors are read in via the following connection:
- Front end CAN (CAN G)

The signals are read in by the reversing camera via the front end CAN.

Evaluation of input factors
The input factors that have been read in are evaluated by the integrated microprocessor and the relevant components are then actuated.
Actuation of components
Components are actuated with the following connection:
- Front end CAN

The signals are sent by the reversing camera via the front end CAN. The functions that use these signals are described in the individual function descriptions (see block diagram or function schematic).
Output of signals
The reversing camera sends the picture data over an analog video interface to the COMAND controller unit, and with code (498) Japan version to the electronic reversing camera (N93/3).
Design
The reversing camera is a color picture camera with a wide-angle lens (angle of vision > 130°) and integrated control unit.
