Location 

The radio with auto pilot system is located in the center console.

Task 

The radio with auto pilot system is the central operating unit for the entertainment and communications systems integrated in the vehicle. It provides the user with the following system components:

• Audio (radio, Digital Audio Broadcasting (Digital Radio) (DAB) with code (537) Digital radio, CD/DVD/CDC (including MP3), AUX)
• Communication (telephone (with address book function), reading SMS)
• Navigation
• Voice control system (VCS [SBS])

The radio with auto pilot system generates a structured and uniform interface, which is displayed on the Audio/COMAND display.

Furthermore, the radio with auto pilot system is the gateway between the following data bus systems:

• Interior CAN
• Telematics CAN
• Media Oriented System Transport (MOST)

Design 

The radio with auto pilot system comprises the following components:

• Operating panel for controlling the audio, navigation and telematics functions
• DVD drive with integrated 6-disc DVD changer
• Central computer
• Navigation processor
• Audio amplifier, except code (810) Sound system

Function 

The buttons for the control panel on the radio with auto pilot system are read in and relayed to the central computer. The button operations are processed further in the central computer and forwarded via MOST, the telematics CAN and the interior CAN to the other system components in the form of messages. If the ON button on the radio with auto pilot system is pressed, the radio with auto pilot system switches on. The volume for the set audio source is regulated by turning the ON button. The function keys switch over to the audio source desired by the user.

The radio with auto pilot system supports the following control units:

• Sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3), with code (810) Sound system
• Digital Audio Broadcasting control unit (N87/3), with code (537) Digital radio

DVD changer 

Data can be read from the navigation DVD or an audio CD/DVD can be played using the integrated DVD changer.

Navigation and global positioning system (GPS) control unit  The navigation processor is integrated into the radio with auto pilot system and calculates the location of the vehicle from the incoming antenna signals and the vehicle's route after the destination has been entered.

Turn rate sensor 

The turn rate sensor determines the direction changes of the vehicle. It is installed into the navigation processor. A calibration is not required.
