The vehicle data card with all the essential data is required to be able to find the correct replacement parts for a particular vehicle.

This requires data that cannot be accommodated on the vehicle (e.g. on the model plate) any more.

The vehicle data card format DIN A5 (approx. 21.0 14.5 cm) was introduced in January 1978 as a standard for all manufacturing plants. Only the vehicle data card that is glued into the service booklet has a size of approx. 10.0 19.5 cm. The back of this card remains empty. As of 01.09.2005, the vehicle data card is no longer glued into the service booklet.

Sales Designation Is used for several model series. 200 is used for instance for models 110, 115, 123. Is used to determine a microfiche of the replacement part literature only in combination with the model (= the first 3 characters of the chassis number).
Chassis number The chassis number is the identification number for every vehicle. It also provides information on the version of this vehicle.
Paintwork Color code for the original paintwork. In the event of two-tone paint, the corresponding codes are entered in the fields UT=bottom section and OT=top section
Equipment Collective code number for color and material dependent interior equipment.
Special equipment CODE 40-68 (common) Special equipment is listed coded. In the event of frequently occurring codes, the first two characters are already preprinted in the corresponding fields. Reading 40/1 or 42/6 or 57/1 etc.
Special equipment code (rarely required) Rarely required codes are written into these fields as a 3-digit number, e.g.: 235 or 260. The meaning of all special equipment codes can be found in the "Code list of special versions - Passenger cars".
Engine number The engine number is the identification number for every engine. It also provides information on the version of this engine.
Transmission number On this data card, the transmission number is a mere production end number (up to 1977). The chassis number is essential in order to determine transmission parts, in some special cases in combination with the production end number.
Headlamp brand It is essential to state the manufacturer for determining headlamp parts, as different manufacturers' parts (e. g. Bosch or Hella) are not completely interchangeable.
Lock system number The lock system numbers of master and secondary keys are identical. Differentiating characteristics: H=master key, N=secondary key. The lock system number has to be specified when ordering spare keys and locks for certain vehicles in order to sustain a consistent closing system.
