REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
DANGER Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or tilting off of the vehicle lift. Align vehicle between vehicle lift columns and position four support plates at vehicle lift support points specified by vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A
DANGER Risk of injury  caused by fingers being pinched or crushed  when removing, installing or aligning hoods, doors, trunk lids, liftgates or sliding roof Keep body parts and limbs well clear of moving parts. AS00.00-Z-0011-01A
DANGER Risk of explosion  caused by escaping oxyhydrogen gas. Risk of injury  caused by caustic burns to eyes, skin and mucous membranes from battery electrolyte (contains diluted sulfuric acid) or metal spatter due to short circuit. Risk of burn injuries  caused by short circuit. Risk of poisoning  caused by swallowing battery electrolyte (contains diluted sulfuric acid) or absorption of lead over the skin or orifices No fire, sparks, open flames or smoking. Wear acid-resistant gloves and clothing and safety glasses with side guards.
Do not place any conductive objects on the battery and avoid any short circuit from battery positive to ground.
Only fill liquid battery electrolyte (diluted sulfuric acid) into suitable and appropriately marked containers.

DANGER Risk of accident  caused by vehicle starting off by itself when engine is running. Risk of injury  caused by contusions and burns during starting procedure or when working near the engine as it is running Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving by itself.
Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes.
Do not touch hot or rotating parts.

1 Deactivate easy entry/exit function Vehicles with code (275) Memory package (driver seat, steering column, mirrors)
NOTES Otherwise the driver seat and steering wheel move into a different position if the driver door is opened or closed for example. The upper frame may be damaged when the holding device is installed.
IMPORTANT Deactivation ensues via buttons on the steering wheel in the "Comfort" menu of the multifunction display.
 
2 Turn key in ignition lock to position "0" IMPORTANT Vehicles with code (889) Keyless Go: Switch off engine, remove Keyless Go cards from vehicle and store outside of the transmission range.  
3 Fix steering wheel in center position SPECIAL TOOL Holding device Fig 4
4 Open engine hood and move to vertical position    
5 Disconnect battery ground line NOTES Insulate ground line as a protection against unintentional contact of detached ground line with ground point of battery. AR54.10-P-0003SX

6 Secure vehicle on vehicle lift against falling over   AR00.60-P-0100SX
7 Remove air filter housing   AR09.10-P-1150SMG
8 Drain air conditioning system IMPORTANT Vehicles with code (580) Automatic air conditioning and with code (581) Comfort automatic air conditioning.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replace desiccant cartridge.

9 Disconnect engine wiring harness   AR01.00-P-2410SMG
10 Disconnect hose (2) at purge line (3) on engine at the left front    
11 Disconnect vacuum line (5) from brake booster (20) IMPORTANT Remove clip and lay vacuum line (5) on brake booster (20) to one side.  
DANGER Risk of explosion  caused by fuel igniting, risk of poisoning  caused by inhaling and swallowing fuel and risk of injury  to eyes and skin caused by contact with fuel No fire, sparks, open flames or smoking.
Only pour fuels into suitable and appropriately marked containers.
Wear protective clothing when handling fuel.

21 Disconnect air line (11) to auxiliary air pump and place to one side

23 Remove upper radiator crossmember Remove screw/bolts (12), locks (13) and unclip hood release cable. Unclip air ducting on the side and remove radiator crossmember upwards.  
24 Disconnect coolant hose (14) to coolant pump (15)    
25 Disconnect coolant hose (16) on front plate connection    
26 Remove lower engine compartment paneling   AR61.20-P-1105SX
27 Drain engine oil FLUID SPECIFICATION Engine oil *BF18.00-P-1001-01V 
28 Detach oil cooler lines from automatic transmission on radiator See: ↓  
Remove/install oil cooler lines for automatic transmission. AR27.55-P-0600SX

29 Disconnect engine oil lines (17) at flange connections (18) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replace sealing rings.

31 Unscrew exhaust system to manifolds, brackets and on transmission IMPORTANT See: ↓

34 Disconnect propeller shaft (23) on transmission IMPORTANTRemoval:  The flex disk (24) remains on the propeller shaft (23).  
35 Install rear engine crossmember (21)    
36 Detach front engine mount Only remove screw/bolts on the underside. AR22.10-P-1260SX
37 Detach retaining plate (25) for pressure and return line to the power steering TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA46.20-P-1003-01M 
38 Unscrew bracket (26) of pressure line    
39 Disconnect electrical connector to the power steering pump    
40 Attach protective cover to cooler    
41 Unscrew servo oil line (29) on bracket (30)    
42 Remove pressure line (27) at power steering pump (28)    
43 Hook engine hoist into engine lifting eyes Load regulator  
44 Lift out engine IMPORTANT When lifting out the engine, ensure that no components in the engine compartment are damaged.  
45 Install in the reverse order

49 Check engine oil level

51 Perform basic programming    
52 Read out fault memory and erase if necessary IMPORTANT Faults which may have been caused by disconnecting wires or by a simulation must be erased in the fault memory after completing the work.
