Electronic Toll Collection, general
The ETC simplifies the process of payment on toll roads. It settles payment procedures automatically without the driver having to stop the car.
Electronic Toll Collection function sequence
To transmit and receive the data, the vehicle is equipped with an ETC/DSRC antenna (A2/94) and the Electronic Toll Collection control unit. The Electronic Toll Collection control unit communicates with the toll booth via the ETC/DSRC antenna. For automatic payment a special ETC card must be inserted into the Electronic Toll Collection control unit. All information concerning the user and the fees that have already been paid is stored on the ETC card. At the vehicle side, the Electronic Toll Collection control unit is connected to the COMAND controller unit (A40/3) via an RS-232C interface. The COMAND controller unit receives voice output and visual output for the ETC system via this interface.
Voice outputs are, e.g.:
- ETC card read error
- ETC card not accepted
- ETC card reader error
- ETC gate communication error
- Detailed information about recent toll payments
- Card not inserted
The COMAND controller unit performs the voice output via the speaker system. On vehicles with code (810) Sound system, the voice output is sent by the COMAND controller unit via MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3) and then output over the speaker system.
More detailed information on the speaker system is available in the "Speaker output function" document.
The COMAND controller unit sends the visual outputs over a low voltage differential signal (LVDS) line to the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8). Visual outputs (pop-up) on Audio/COMAND display are available, e.g. in the following cases:
- COMAND controller unit is booted and ETC card is not inserted
- COMAND controller unit is booted and ETC card is inserted
- Positive feedback from toll booth
- Negative feedback from toll booth (e.g. no authorization)
