Function requirements 

Mobile phone system, general 

A distinction is made between the following 2 versions for the mobile phone system:

Both versions use Bluetooth technology for data transfer.

The audio unit can integrate the latest-generation mobile phones into the vehicle hierarchy via the Bluetooth interface of the mobile phone and the Bluetooth antenna.

If several Bluetooth-compatible mobile phones are located in the vehicle, then the connection is established with the last mobile phone used in the vehicle. If this is not in the vehicle, then a search is made for a mobile phone used previous to this.

For a Bluetooth-compatible mobile phone which is authorized on the audio unit to be operated in the vehicle, the mobile phone must support Hands Free Profile (HFP) 1.0 or 1.5.

IMPORTANT Finding and connecting Bluetooth mobile telephones: Mobile telephones not registered with the system can be activated with the basic function "Tel" in the menu item "Telephone" and submenu item "Bluetooth telephones". A list of mobile phones already recognized is displayed. This list can be used to select and authorize the required mobile phone. The "Update" entry is used to search for new mobile phones. After the update, it is possible to search and authorize the mobile phone to be connected from the displayed list.

IMPORTANT The system is described using the comfort telephony as an example. Differences from the basic telephony are marked by the symbol IMPORTANT .

The mobile phone system includes the following processes:

Switching on and off characteristics 

With basic telephony, the mobile phone must be switched on or off manually via the buttons on the mobile phone. With comfort telephony the mobile phone is switched on automatically by a wake-up pulse from the audio unit when the audio unit is switched on. The switch-on signal of the audio equipment is transmitted to the cradle via a direct line and via the Bluetooth module. The mobile phone is then switched on and supplied with power. If set on the mobile phone, the Personal Identification Number (PIN) is requested after the mobile phone has been switched on. The PIN prompt is shown by the audio unit through a low voltage differential signal (LVDS) line on the Audio/COMAND display as well as over the interior CAN on the instrument cluster.

Depending on the prompt, the 4 to 8-digit PIN must be entered in one of the following ways:

The control signals from the buttons on the mobile phone are processed internally by the mobile phone.

The control signals from the telephone buttons of the audio unit are processed internally.

The Audio/COMAND control panel control signals are sent over the telematics CAN to the audio unit.

The voice signals from the VCS (with code (512) COMAND APS incl. DVD changer, with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or with code (511) Audio 50 APS incl. DVD changer) are sensed by the hands-free system and relayed directly to the audio equipment via a direct line. The control and voice signals are sent from the audio unit to the mobile phone via the following route:

After enabling the mobile phone, attempts to register in an available mobile phone network in the following manner:

After logging into the service provider's cellular telephone system network the following is shown on the display of the mobile phone and the Audio/COMAND display:

The mobile phone signals are received via the following route:

The display on the mobile phone's screen is forwarded internally. The display on the Audio/COMAND display is transmitted in the following way:

IMPORTANT For basic telephony, the switch-on signal is processed internally in the mobile phone. The PIN inquiry, if set on the mobile phone, is only displayed on the mobile phone's screen. The PIN is only entered via the buttons on the mobile phone. After enabling the SIM card with the correct PIN, the mobile phone attempts to log into an available cellular telephone system network over the mobile phone antenna. The cellular telephone system network name is shown on the mobile phone display only when "HFP 1.5" is supported. The display and the signals from the keys on the mobile phone are processed internally in the mobile phone.

Establishing call and terminating call 

The establish call and terminate call function consists of the following subfunctions:

D Establish call via VCS (with code (511) Audio 50 APS incl. DVD changer, with code (512) COMAND APS incl. DVD changer, with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation)) 

D Establish telephone call in hands-free mode

Establish and terminate telephone call via the buttons on the mobile phone 

The telephone number is selected using the buttons on the mobile phone or from the mobile phone's phone book. The "Accept phone call" button is pressed. The phone call is then established in hands-free mode or in private mode, depending on the model.

The control signals from the buttons on the mobile phone are processed internally in the mobile phone.

IMPORTANT In "Private Mode" the user makes a telephone call without other vehicle occupants being able to take part in the conversation, i.e. voice input takes place via the microphone integrated in the mobile phone, and voice output takes place via the speaker integrated in the mobile phone.

Pressing the "END" button on the mobile phone terminates the telephone call (also in hands-free mode). When a telephone call is terminated using the mobile phone buttons, the mobile phone interrupts the transmission or reception of mobile phone signals or data. This process runs internally in the mobile phone.

Establish and terminate call using the telephone keys or the keypad on the audio unit 

After dialing the telephone number using the telephone buttons on the "audio unit" and pressing the "Accept phone call" button, the phone call is established in hands-free mode.

The control signals from the telephone buttons on the audio unit are processed internally and forwarded to the mobile phone via the following route:

IMPORTANT With basic telephony, communication takes place between the audio unit and the mobile phone in the following way:

Pressing the "END" button on the "audio unit" terminates the telephone call. The control signals from the telephone buttons on the audio unit are internally processed and forwarded the opposite way to the mobile phone.

Establish and terminate telephone call via Audio/COMAND control panel 

The basic "telephone" (TEL) function is activated using the TEL "hardkey" on the audio unit or the "Tel" menu item in the application bar on the Audio/COMAND display via the Audio/COMAND control panel and then shown on the Audio/COMAND display. The control signals from the "TEL hardkey" on the audio unit are processed internally. The control signals from the Audio/COMAND control panel are forwarded to the audio unit over CAN A. The menu item is shown on the Audio/COMAND display by the audio unit over a low voltage differential signaling line.

The following ways of dialing a telephone number are now available to the user:

Activation of the "SEND" function on the Audio/COMAND display establishes the telephone call in hands-free mode.

The control signals from the Audio/COMAND control panel are forwarded to the "audio unit" via the telematics CAN. The control signals are then forwarded to the mobile phone via the following route:

IMPORTANT The user can scroll forward and back in the mobile phone's phone book or the COMAND controller unit's address book and in the call lists using the Audio/COMAND control panel to select the name of the person to be called.

IMPORTANT With basic telephony, communication takes place between the audio unit and the mobile phone in the following way:

When the "END" function is activated in the "Telephone (TEL)" base function on the Audio/COMAND display, the telephone call is terminated. The control signals from the Audio/COMAND control panel are forwarded to the "audio unit" via the telematics CAN.

Establish and terminate telephone call via the multifunction steering wheel button groups 

The phone book or the address book is selected by pressing the system selection (S110s3) button via the selection menu in the instrument cluster (). The name of the person to be called is selected by scrolling forward and back in the phone book or the address book using the scroll forward and back button (S110s1).

The accept/terminate phone call button (S111s3) can be used to establish the telephone call in hands-free mode.

The control signals of the multifunction steering wheel button groups are forwarded to the "audio equipment" via the following components:

The control signals are sent from the audio unit to the mobile phone via the following route:

The display in the instrument cluster is conducted by the "audio unit" via interior CAN.

IMPORTANT With basic telephony, communication takes place between the audio unit and the mobile phone in the following way:

The telephone call can then be terminated again using the accept and terminate phone call button.

Establish call via VCS (with code (511) Audio 50 APS incl. DVD changer with code (512) COMAND APS incl. DVD changer, with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation)) 

Pressing the voice control system ON button (S111s4) of the right multifunction steering wheel button group activates the voice control of the voice control system.

The control signal of the voice control system ON button is forwarded via the following components to the audio equipment:

A signal tone is emitted after the voice control system has been activated.

The signal tone is emitted by the audio unit over the vehicle's speaker system.

IMPORTANT More detailed information on the speaker system is available in the "Speaker output function" document.

Establishing a call is activated in the dialog with the VCS [SBS] with the help of voice commands, e.g. with the following:

The voice commands are registered by the hands-free system microphone and forwarded to the audio unit over a direct line. The voice commands are then forwarded to the mobile phone via the following route:

The voice control of the voice control system (VCS [SBS]) is used to establish the telephone call in the hands-free mode.

IMPORTANT With basic telephony, communication takes place between the audio unit and the mobile phone in the following way:

Function sequence, establish telephone call in hands-free mode 

Once the call has been successfully set up, the mobile phone transmits or receives the mobile phone signals via the following route:

The voice input is picked up by the hands-free system microphone and forwarded to the audio equipment via a direct line. The voice input is then forwarded to the mobile phone via the following route:

IMPORTANT With basic telephony, the audio unit transmits or receives the voice signals and the mobile phone signals via the following route:

The voice output is emitted by the audio unit over the vehicle's speaker system.

IMPORTANT When in "private mode" the user can make a telephone call without other vehicle occupants being able to hear the conversation. "Private Mode" is activated when the mobile phone is removed from the mobile phone cradle.

Function sequence, terminate phone call in hands-free mode 

After a phone call has been terminated, the mobile phone interrupts the transmission or reception of the mobile phone signals. This takes place internally in the mobile phone.

Accepting calls, rejecting calls and call waiting 

The mobile phone can be used by the user to initiate or terminate a telephone call to another person in the mobile phone system network or the fixed-line network. If another call is received during a telephone conversation, it is indicated (calls waiting tone) and can be accepted or refused.

It is possible to accept, reject or toggle a call using the following components:

The accept call, reject call and call waiting functions consist of the following subfunctions:

Call signal 

The mobile phone receives a call signal via the following route:

Information about the caller is displayed on the mobile phone's screen. The display on the mobile phone's screen is forwarded internally.

At the same time, the call signal is forwarded to the audio unit via the following route:

IMPORTANT With basic telephony the mobile phone receives the call signal. The call signal is then forwarded to the "audio unit" in the following way:

The audio equipment sends the call phone by means of audio signals which are then output on the speaker system in the vehicle. At the same time, the audio unit mutes the currently active audio source (e.g. in radio mode) (MUTE). This takes place internally in the "audio unit".

The call recognition is displayed by the audio equipment on audio/COMAND display via LVDS line. The audio equipment relays the call recognition via the interior CAN to the instrument cluster where it is also displayed.

Call acceptance or rejection via the buttons on the mobile phone 

Pressing the "Accept call" button on the mobile phone serves to accept the call in hands-free mode. Pressing the "End" button on the mobile phone rejects the call. The control signals from the buttons on the mobile phone are processed internally.

Accept and reject call using the telephone keys or the keypad on the audio unit 

Pressing the "Accept phone call" button on the audio unit accepts the call in hands-free mode and pressing the "End" button on the audio unit rejects the call. The control signals from the buttons on the audio unit are processed internally and forwarded to the mobile phone via the following route:

IMPORTANT With basic telephony, communication takes place between the audio unit and the mobile phone in the following way:

Call acceptance or rejection via the Audio/COMAND control panel 

Through the call signal, the caller ID is displayed on the Audio/COMAND display by the audio unit via an LVDS line. Selecting the "Accept call" function with the Audio/COMAND control panel accepts the call in the hands-free mode and selecting the "Reject call" function rejects the call. The control signals from the Audio/COMAND control panel are forwarded to the "audio unit" via the telematics CAN.

The control signals are then forwarded to the mobile phone via the following route:

IMPORTANT With basic telephony, communication takes place between the audio unit and the mobile phone in the following way:

Call acceptance and rejection via the multifunction steering wheel button groups 

The call is accepted or rejected in hands-free mode by pressing the accept/terminate phone call button in the corresponding subfield.

The control signal from the accept and terminate phone call button is forwarded to the "audio unit" via the following components:

The control signals are sent from the audio unit to the mobile phone via the following route:

The display in the instrument cluster is conducted by the "audio unit" via interior CAN.

IMPORTANT With basic telephony, communication takes place between the audio unit and the mobile phone in the following way:

Telephone call in hands-free mode 

After the call has been accepted, the mobile phone receives or transmits the mobile phone signals via the following route:

The voice input in hands-free mode (except "private mode") is picked up by the hands-free system microphone and forwarded to the audio equipment via a direct line.

The voice commands are then forwarded to the mobile phone via the following route:

IMPORTANT With basic telephony, communication takes place between the audio unit and the mobile phone in the following way:

The voice output (except "Private Mode") is emitted by the audio unit over the vehicle's speaker system.

Call waiting 

If another call signal is received during a telephone call, this is shown on the Audio/COMAND display by the audio unit over an LVDS line. The telephone call can now be accepted or rejected via the buttons on the mobile phone.

If the incoming call is accepted, it is activated in hands-free mode and the existing call is terminated. If the incoming call is rejected, the existing call remains active in hands-free mode.

The mobile phone button control signals are processed internally and forwarded as follows to the audio unit:

Telephone book 

The phone book contains the phone book entries stored in the audio unit. The user can manage (view and delete) his contact data in the telephone book. Additionally, the data from the phone book of the mobile phone can be loaded into the phone book of the audio unit (external data).

The data from the mobile phone's phone book are then permanently available, even if the mobile phone is no longer inserted in the cradle. External phone book entries can only be removed by deleting all entries or deleting individual entries.

The system can be provided with the stored information via the phone book entries and the connection established immediately.

The phone book is selected with the "TEL" button on the audio equipment via the "Telephone (Tel)" base function or with the Audio/COMAND control panel via the "Tel" menu item in the application bar on the Audio/COMAND display and then via the "Name" menu item in the function bar.

IMPORTANT In vehicles with basic telephony, it is possible to gain read access to the telephone book of the mobile phone, if the mobile phone supports the Bluetooth profile Phone Book Access Profile (PBAP). Otherwise, data from the phone book of the mobile phone can only be loaded onto the audio unit via "vCards".

Address book (with code (512) COMAND APS incl. DVD changer, with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or with code (528) COMAND incl. DVD changer) 

The address book contains the address entries saved in the audio unit. The user can manage all the contact data in the address book (view, edit, add, delete and create). Additionally, the data from the phone book of the mobile phone can be uploaded into the address book of the audio unit. The data from the mobile phone's phone book are then permanently available, even if the mobile phone is no longer inserted in the cradle.

To call the address book press the "TEL" button on the audio equipment or select the "Tel" menu item in the application bar on the audio/COMAND display. Call up address book by selecting the "TEL" base function again in the application bar and choosing the menu item "Address book".

IMPORTANT If the address book was the most recent application selected in the TEL base function, this is called up immediately when the "Tel" menu item is selected in the application bar (Last Mode).

Data can also be transferred from other external devices (e.g. PDAs, laptops, etc.) to the address book via the Bluetooth interface of the mobile phone and the Bluetooth antenna. These data are then permanently available as address entries. The SD slot on the COMAND controller unit can also be used to transfer vCards from an SD card into the address book. The address-relevant applications for telephony can be started directly via the address book entries and provided with the data stored.

Additionally, the user can enter or select a telephone number in the following ways:

IMPORTANT In vehicles with basic telephony, it is possible to gain read access to the telephone book of the mobile phone if the mobile phone supports the PBAP Bluetooth profile. Otherwise, data from the phone book of the mobile phone can only be loaded onto the audio unit via "vCards".

The address entries can be deleted according to type:

Voice control function (with code (511) Audio 50 APS incl. DVD changer, with code (512) COMAND APS incl. DVD changer, with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation)) 

The individual functions of the driver information system are called up and operated via the voice control system (VCS [SBS]). The voice control system is integrated into the audio equipment. The system can be controlled by voice by spelling out or entering complete words.

The voice control can be activated or deactivated using the following buttons on the multifunction steering wheel (MFL):

Voice input takes place via the relevant hands-free system microphone, which is connected to the audio unit via a direct line. Words spoken into the hands-free system microphone are converted into an electrical signal and forwarded to the audio unit.

"Private Mode" 

When in "Private mode", the user can make a telephone call without other vehicle occupants being able to hear the conversation. When dialing using the buttons on the mobile phone, the telephone call is carried out in "Private Mode" if the mobile phone supports "Private Mode" and "Private Mode" has been activated.

After a telephone call has been accepted or established in hands-free mode, you can switch to "Private Mode" by activating "Private Mode" via the mobile phone if the mobile phone supports "Private Mode".

"Seamless Switch" 

"Seamless Switch" provides the following functionality:

IMPORTANT With some Japanese mobile phones you can select how the mobile phone behaves if a connection is interrupted. If the "Switch off if connection is interrupted" setting has been selected, "Seamless Switch" cannot be activated because a brief connection interruption occurs.

Short Message Service (SMS) function (with code (386) Comfort telephony) 

The SMS application enables the user to manage his/her SMS messages (e.g. to read or delete them). For this, the SMS messages previously received on the mobile phone as well as the new SMS messages are forwarded to the "audio unit". The following SMS functions are possible:

The SMS function consists of the following subfunctions:

Upload given SMS to audio unit 

The SMS already stored in the mobile phone are transmitted from the mobile phone to the "audio control unit" in the following way:

IMPORTANT Under certain circumstances, loading SMS messages may take a long time. This may be because of the mobile phone or the number of SMS messages in the mobile phone.

Receive SMS message 

The SMS messages received by the mobile phone are sent as follows to the audio unit:

Call up the SMS application 

The SMS function for managing (e.g. reading or deleting) SMS messages is called up using the "Tel" basic function.

The "TEL" base function is called up by pressing the "TEL" function key on the audio unit. The corresponding basic mask appears. The "TEL" base function can also be called up via the "TEL" menu in the application bar.

The "SMS" submenu can then be called up on the function bar. The "TEL" function key control signals are processed internally by the audio unit.

The Audio/COMAND control panel control signals are sent over the telematics CAN to the audio unit.

The Audio-/COMAND display is actuated by the audio unit over a low voltage differential signaling line.

Display SMS message 

The SMS content is displayed on the Audio/COMAND display. The audio equipment actuates the Audio/COMAND display over the low voltage differential signaling line.

Composing and sending SMS messages 

SMS messages can only be read and transmitted using the control buttons on the mobile phone. The control signals from the mobile phone's control buttons are processed internally.

Reading out SMS message 

SMS voice output is conducted over the vehicle speaker system.

Additional function requirements for Mercedes-Benz Contact (except code (494) USA version or code (498) Japan version) 

Mercedes-Benz Contact functions (except code (494) USA version or code (498) Japan version) 

The "Mercedes-Benz Contact" function provides user-friendly access to the services rendered by Mercedes-Benz Services by means of a fixed, reserved telephone book entry in the telephone book or in the address book of the "audio unit" or the telephone book of the mobile phone. The "Mercedes-Benz Contact" function uses the hands-free system (via Bluetooth) and supports the service acceptance process at the Service Center by voice communication with synchronous transfer of the vehicle data.

Function sequence for establishing telephone call, data transfer and terminating call with Service Center 

The fixed, reserved telephone book entry in the telephone book or in the address book of the "audio unit" or in the telephone book of the mobile phone is selected via one of the following components:

After an active call has been established to the Service Center, the user starts the data transfer. The data is transferred after the call has been established by actuating a number key on the keypad of the audio equipment.

For data transfer purposes, the audio unit checks the kilometer reading and the maintenance computer information of the instrument cluster via the interior CAN.

On vehicles with code (527) MB Audio 50 APS radio, with code (511) Audio 50 APS with DVD changer, with code (525) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer, the navigation data is also transmitted by the navigation module integrated in the audio equipment.

The data is transmitted by the audio unit by means of Dual Tone Multiple Frequency (DTMF) tones to the service center in the same way as when the call has been established successfully. After the data has been transferred to the Service Center, the user can talk to an employee at the Service Center or the workshop. The transmitted data is then available to the employee.
