Remove/check/install front axle brake pads - AR42.10-P-1600GQ

MODEL 166 (except 166.074/874)

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
DANGER Risk of poisoning  from swallowing brake fluid. Risk of injury  from skin and eye contact with brake fluid Only pour brake fluid into suitable and appropriately marked containers. Wear protective clothing and eye protection when handling brake fluid. AS42.50-Z-0001-01A
DANGER Risk of injury  . Skin or eye injuries may result when handling hot or glowing objects. Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses, if necessary. AS00.00-Z-0002-01A
NOTES Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts   AH00.00-N-0001-01A
NOTES Notes on repairs to brake system   AH42.00-P-0003-01A
NOTES Brake fluid notes   AH42.50-P-0001-01A
1 Open engine hood and raise to vertical position   AR88.40-P-1000GQ
2 Remove cover over left suspension strut tower    
CLEAN Clean     
3 Clean the area around the cap of the brake fluid reservoir Assembly cleaner *BR00.45-Z-1028-04A 
4 Unscrew cap of brake fluid reservoir and extract some brake fluid IMPORTANT In order to prevent the brake fluid reservoir from overflowing when pressing back the brake pistons.  
5 Remove front wheel-and-tire assemblies    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE     AP40.10-P-4050EW
6 Disconnect right front brake wear sensor (S10/2) from feed line (1)    
7 Unclip feed line (1) of the front right brake wear sensor (S10/2) from bracket (3) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Check that the feed line (1) is routed correctly.  
8 Detach brake hose (4) on bracket (3)

    INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Check that the brake hose (4) is routed correctly.  
9 Detach spring plate (5)    
10 Remove protective caps (6) and remove guide pin IMPORTANT Use a commercially available hexagon socket screwdriver bit (size 11 or size 7/16 inch).  
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Guide pin to brake caliper support *BA42.10-P-1002-10L 
11 Remove brake caliper (2) with brake pads (7) NOTES
Pad the brake caliper (2) and secure it to the vehicle free of tension; when doing so, do not kink the brake hose (4) and feed line (1) or subject them to tension.
Otherwise damage will occur.		  
12 Take brake pads (7) out of brake caliper (2) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Only sets of brake pads (7) approved by Mercedes-Benz may be installed.  
INSPECT Check     
13 Check brake pads (7) for condition and wear    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE     AP42.10-P-4253A 
    IMPORTANT Replace brake pads (7) if necessary.  
14 Check condition of brake disks and inspect for signs of wear    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE     AP42.10-P-4258GQ 
    If damaged or worn
↓
Replace brake disks		  
      AR42.10-P-0220GZ 
15 Pull right front brake wear sensor (S10/2) out of pad backing plate and check    
IMPORTANT Notes on installing brake wear indicator contact sensors   AH42.10-P-0003-01CW
    IMPORTANT Check for damage, replace if necessary.  
16 Check guide pins and their boots IMPORTANT Check guide pins for sluggishness and damage. Check boots for damage and loose seating. Replace damaged parts with new parts.  
17 Check brake caliper (2) If the brake caliper (2) is leaky or the dust boot is damaged:

Replace brake caliper (2)

18 Press back brake piston using resetting device SPECIAL TOOL Resetting device
If the brake piston is difficult to move:
↓
Replace brake caliper (2)		 Figure

19 Check folds of the dust boots of the brake piston IMPORTANT If the dust boot projects beyond the brake piston, position the dust boot correctly.  
CLEAN Clean     
20 Clean contact surfaces of the brake pads (7) on the brake caliper (2) and brake caliper support (8) with a rag INSTALLATION NOTES
Do not damage the dust boots and boots of the guide pins. Do not use sharp-edged or pointy tools.
Otherwise, the brake caliper (2) or the brake caliper support (8) can be damaged.		  
Assembly cleaner *BR00.45-Z-1028-04A 
21 Apply brake pad paste   AR42.10-P-0161-01B
NOTES
Use only the brake pad paste described in the linked description and only apply this at the specified points.
Otherwise, complaints may be made about the noise or damage can occur on the brake system!		  
MB Plastilube brake paste (brownish) *BR00.45-Z-1084-06A 
22 Install in the reverse order    
DANGER Risk of accident  when commissioning the vehicle due to a lack of braking effect when the service brake is operated for the first time after repair work. Before starting the engine, actuate brake pedal several times until pressure is built up and maintained in the brake system.   AS42.50-Z-0002-01A
23 Operate the brake pedal several times until the brake pads (7) contact the brake disks IMPORTANT Firm resistance should be noticeable at the brake pedal.  
INSPECT Check     
24 Check fluid level in the brake fluid reservoir, correct if necessary    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE     AP42.10-P-4210GZ 
25 Carry out brake test on the test stand    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE     AP42.00-P-4290BA
