Replacing and installing brake pads - AR42.10-P-0170GWH

MODEL 463 as of model year 2013/model refinement package 2012

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
DANGER Risk of poisoning  caused by swallowing brake fluid. Risk of injury  caused by brake fluid coming into contact with skin and eyes Only pour brake fluid into suitable and appropriately marked containers. Wear protective clothing and eye protection when handling brake fluid. AS42.50-Z-0001-01A
DANGER Risk of accident  when commissioning the vehicle due to a lack of braking effect when the service brake is operated for the first time after repair work Before starting engine, actuate brake pedal several times until the pressure is built up and maintained in the brake system. AS42.50-Z-0002-01A
NOTES Brake fluid notes   AH42.50-P-0001-01A

1 Open engine hood   AR88.40-P-1000GG
2 Unscrew cap of brake fluid reservoir and extract some brake fluid IMPORTANT In order to prevent the brake fluid reservoir from overflowing when pressing back the brake pistons.  
3 Lift/jack up vehicle   AR00.60-P-1000G
4 Remove rear wheels   AP40.10-P-4050G
INSPECT Checking     
5 Check brake pads (1) and brake disks (2) IMPORTANT If necessary, always replace brake pads (1) and brake disks (2) as a set.  
Brake pad wear limit *BE42.10-P-1001-10A 
6 Detach electrical connection from right rear brake wear sensor (S10/4) When removing the brake pads (1) on the right-hand side of the vehicle  
7 Detach retaining spring from brake caliper    
8 Pry off and remove protective caps (3) from boots (4)    
9 Remove guide bolts TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA42.10-P-1002-17B 
10 Remove brake caliper (5) NOTES Do not subject brake hoses (6) to tensile loads or kink. To relieve the load on the brake hose (6), fasten the brake caliper (5) to the vehicle free of tension. Otherwise, the brake hose (6) will be damaged.  
11 Take out brake pads (1) IMPORTANT Brake pads (1) are to be disposed of as special waste. The local authorities can provide information regarding whether disposal is also permitted as industrial waste similar to domestic waste.
IMPORTANT Only complete sets of brake pads (1) approved by Mercedes-Benz may be installed.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Insert inner brake pad (1) with riveted-on spring in brake piston. Insert outer brake pad (1) into brake caliper support (7) and mount brake caliper (5).
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Do not  apply any brake pastes or lubricants to brake pads (1) or brake calipers (5)!
 
12 Pull right rear brake wear sensor (S10/4) out of brake pad (1) When removing the brake pads (1) on the right-hand side of the vehicle
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replace defective or seized right rear brake wear sensor (S10/4).
 
INSPECT Checking     
13 Check brake caliper (5) for leaks IMPORTANT In the event of leaks: ↓  
IMPORTANT Replace brake caliper (5). AR42.10-P-0080GW 
14 Check dust boots of brake piston IMPORTANT Check dust boots for damage and correct seating, if necessary:

Replace brake caliper (5). AR42.10-P-0080GW 
15 Press back brake piston using resetting device NOTES Do not position pusher tool on brake disk (2). Otherwise the brake system will be damaged.

IMPORTANT If the brake pistons are sluggish, brake caliper (5) must be replaced:

Replace brake caliper (5). AR42.10-P-0080GW 
CLEAN Clean     
16 Clean the contact surfaces of the brake pads (1) in the brake caliper (5) with a rag NOTES While doing so, do not damage the dust boots on the brake piston. Do not use sharp-edged or pointy tools. Otherwise, the brake caliper (5) will be damaged.  
Cleaner from package *BR00.45-Z-1028-04A 
17 Install in the reverse order    
18 Operate brake pedal several times until the brake pads (1) make contact with the brake disks (2) and a firm resistance is noticeable    
INSPECT Checking     
19 Correct fluid level in brake fluid reservoir    
20 Check function and effectiveness of brake system
