Location

The fully integrated transmission control unit is integrated into the fully integrated transmission control controller unit, which is located in the oil pan at the bottom of the transmission.

Task

General

With its own independent diagnosis system the fully integrated transmission control unit determines the current operating condition of the vehicle and controls all gear change sequences taking into account shift comfort and the driving situation.

Flash programming

The transmission control system in the fully integrated transmission control unit (VGS) is flash programmable i.e. the complete software in the control unit can be exchanged (replaced). The software required for control unit programming can be found on the STAR DIAGNOSIS update DVD.

Controller Area Network (data bus/CAN bus) (CAN)

The fully integrated transmission control unit is connected via the drive train CAN (CAN C) to the vehicle's CAN network, and exchanges data with other control units.

IMPORTANT The ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/10) (for gasoline engines) or CDI control unit (N3/9) (for diesel engines) acts as an interface between the drive train CAN and the chassis CAN (CAN E).

Input and output signals

The following input signals are evaluated by the fully integrated transmission control unit and the appropriate output signals are generated:

Direct input signals

Direct output signals

CAN input signals

Electronic ignition lock control unit (N73)

Electronic Stability Program control unit (N30/4) (except code (233) DISTRONIC PLUS and model 218.374/974) or Premium Electronic Stability Program control unit (N30/7) (with code (233) DISTRONIC PLUS or model 218.374/974)

Steering column tube module control unit (N80)

Front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1)

ME-SFI control unit (N3/10) or CDI control unit (N3/9)

Transmission oil auxiliary pump control unit (N89) (with code (B03) ECO start/stop function)
