MODEL 218 up to model year 2015 with CODE 621 (Intelligent Light System (left-hand traffic))
MODEL 218 up to model year 2015 with CODE 622 (Intelligent Light System (right-hand traffic))
Up to 31.08.2014, shown on left front lamp unit (E1)
As of 01.09.2014, shown on left front lamp unit (E1)
Location
One headlamp control unit each is located on the underside of the left front lamp unit (up to 31.08.2014) or on the side of the left front lamp unit (as of 01.09.2014) and on the underside of the right front lamp unit (up to 31.08.2014) or on the side of the right front lamp unit (as of 01.09.2014).
The headlamp control units are tightly screwed to the housing of the respective front lamp units. The headlamp control units are connected to the vehicle-side wiring harness via the front lamp units.
Task
The headlamp control units operate in a master-slave combination and communicate with each other via the front end CAN (CAN G) (up to 28.02.2013) or the chassis CAN E2 (CAN E2) (as of 01.03.2013). As the master, the left headlamp control unit synchronizes the right headlamp control unit.
The headlamp control units have the following tasks:
- Reading in of sensors and signals
- Evaluation of input factors
- Controlling functions
- Actuation of components
Reading in of sensors and signals
The input factors are read in via the following connections:
- Direct line (left headlamp control unit)
- LIN (headlamp-internal)
- Front end CAN (up to 28.02.2013) or chassis CAN 2 (as of 01.03.2013)
Direct line
The left headlamp control unit reads in the signals of the following components over direct lines:
- Left rear level sensor (B22/7) (without Code (488) Steel/air suspension and without code (489) AIRMATIC (air suspension with continuous adjustment damping))
- Left front level sensor (B22/8) (up to 31.08.2014 without Code (488) Steel/air suspension and without code (489) AIRMATIC (air suspension with continuous adjustment damping))
- Left active curve light position sensor (E1b1) (up to 31.08.2014)
- Temperature sensors in left front lamp unit (as of 01.09.2014)
The right headlamp control unit reads in the signals of the following components over direct lines:
- Right active curve light position sensor (E2b1) (up to 31.08.2014)
- Temperature sensors in right front lamp unit (as of 01.09.2014)
LIN
The following information is read in by the left headlamp control unit via left headlamp LIN (LIN G1):
- Diagnostic data:
- Left front actuation module 1, LED exterior lighting (E1n7) (up to 31.08.2014)
- Left front LED exterior lighting actuation module 2 (E1n8)
The following information is read in by the right headlamp control unit via right headlamp LIN (LIN G2):
- Diagnostic data:
- Right front actuation module 1, LED exterior lighting (E2n7) (up to 31.08.2014)
- Right front LED exterior lighting actuation module 2 (E2n8)
Front end CAN (up to 28.02.2013) or chassis CAN 2 (as of 01.03.2013)
The signals are read in by the headlamp control units over the front end CAN or chassis CAN 2.
The functions that use these signals are described in the individual function descriptions (see block diagram or function schematic).
Evaluation of input factors
The input factors that have been read in are evaluated by the integrated microprocessor and the relevant components are then actuated.
Controlling functions
The following functions are realized by actuating the appropriate components:
- Low beam
- High beam and headlamp flasher
- Automatic headlamp range adjustment (HRA [LWR])
- Cornering lights (up to 31.08.2014)
- Active curve lights (up to 31.08.2014)
- Active light distribution (up to 31.08.2014)
- Infrared light (with code (610) Night View Assist)
Actuation of components
The actuation of the components takes place via the following connections:
- Direct line
- LIN
Direct line
The following components are actuated by the left headlamp control unit via direct lines:
- Left headlamp range adjustment actuator motor (E1m1)
- Left active curve light actuator motor (E1m2) (up to 31.08.2014)
The following components are actuated by the right headlamp control unit via direct lines:
- Right headlamp range adjustment actuator motor (E2m1)
- Right active curve light actuator motor (E2m2) (up to 31.08.2014)
LIN
The following components are actuated by the left headlamp control unit via left headlamp LIN:
- Left front LED exterior lighting actuation module 1 (corner-illuminating fog lamps, infrared light (with code (610) Night View Assist))
- Left front actuation module 2, LED exterior lighting (diagnostic data, as of 01.09.2014 request for output of low and high beams)
The following components are actuated by the right headlamp control unit via right headlamp LIN:
- Right front LED exterior lighting actuation module 1 (corner-illuminating fog lamps, infrared light (with code (610) Night View Assist))
- Right front actuation module 2, LED exterior lighting (diagnostic data, as of 01.09.2014 request for output of low and high beams)
