DANGER Risk of death  due to high voltage in xenon headlamps. Risk of explosion/risk of fire  caused by highly flammable materials in the vicinity of damaged xenon bulbs. Risk of injury  caused by UV light, hot components at xenon headlamps and glass splinters produced by bursting xenon bulbs. Risk of poisoning  caused by inhalation of mercury vapors and by toxic salts and mercury compounds being ingested or coming into contact with skin Do not touch parts conducting high voltage. Persons with active electronic implants  (e.g. cardiac pacemakers) must never work on xenon headlamps. Switch off the entire lighting system. Wear insulated safety shoes, safety glasses and protective gloves. Remove highly inflammable materials from the hazard area. Ensure sufficient ventilation in the working area. AS82.10-Z-0001-01A

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Carry out initial startup of left front lamp unit (E1) or right front lamp unit (E2) When replacing the left front lamp unit (E1) or the right front lamp unit (E2).  
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS AD00.00-P-2000-04A
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Note character string of "LAM number" or "DataMatrix CODE" on left front lamp unit (E1) or right front lamp unit (E2).
2.1 Switch off ignition and remove transmitter key from electronic ignition lock control unit MODEL 218
without CODE 889 (KEYLESS-GO)
 
2.2 Switch off ignition and remove transmitter key or KEYLESS-GO start/stop button from electronic ignition lock control unit MODEL 218
with CODE 889 (KEYLESS-GO)
 
3.1 Remove bottom section of soundproofing at front MODEL 218 with ENGINE 642, 651

3.2 Remove front engine compartment paneling MODEL 218 with ENGINE 157, 274, 276, 278

4.1 Detach front bumper When removing left front lamp unit (E1) or right front lamp unit (E2) individually. AR88.20-P-2000-01EL
NOTES Use suitable fabric tape to mask off bumper in area of left front lamp unit (E1) or right front lamp unit (E2).
Otherwise the paint may be damaged.

INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Screw in screw/bolt (11) only up to contact surface.
 
6 Push cover (1) to one side and remove screw/bolt (2) from left front lamp unit (E1) or right front lamp unit (E2) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Screw in screw/bolt (2) only up to contact surface.  
7 Remove screws/bolts (3, 4) from left front lamp unit (E1) or right front lamp unit (E2) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Screw in screws/bolts (3, 4) only up to contact surface.  
8 Remove screw/bolt (7) from left front lamp unit (E1) or right front lamp unit (E2) MODEL 218
up to model year 2015
IMPORTANT Screw/bolt (7) remains in the left front lamp unit (E1) or right front lamp unit (E2).
 
9 Pull left front lamp unit (E1) or right front lamp unit (E2) forwards, release catch hook (8) and push left or right telescopic nozzle (5) to the rear MODEL 218

INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Insert pins (6, 9) on left front lamp unit (E1) or right front lamp unit (E2) and engage catch hook (8).
 
10 Pull left front lamp unit (E1) or right front lamp unit (E2) forwards and disconnect electrical connection (10)    
11 Remove left front lamp unit (E1) and right front lamp unit (E2)    
12.1 Remove left xenon light control unit or right xenon light control unit MODEL 218

with CODE 614 (Bi-xenon headlamps)

14 Remove left front actuation module 1, LED exterior lighting or right front actuation module 1, LED exterior lighting MODEL 218
