Radio mode, function

After the COMAND controller unit as well as the COMAND display have been switched on by pressing the button "ON" (A40/9s6) at the front central operating unit and the "Radio" menu has been activated, the antenna structures in the rear window start receiving high frequency (RF [HF]) signals for ultra-short wave (FM [UKW]) and medium wave (MW). Modulated onto these HF signals are music, voice and data signals. The rear window antenna amplifier module filters the radio frequency band frequencies from the RF [HF] signals received, and amplifies these. The amplified signals are then transmitted to the 2 radio tuners in the audio tuner control unit via a coaxial line.

The 2 radio tuners separate the useful information (audible frequencies) from the carrier signal (not audible). The demodulated audio signals are amplified and converted into sound signals by the vehicle speakers.

Antenna diversity, function

In the case of the "antenna diversity" function, reception-dependent switching over is carried out between the FM antennas of the rear window. The function is automatic and is carried out by the rear window antenna amplifier module. The 2 radio tuners in the audio tuner control unit merely generate the intermediate frequency (IF) signal, which serves as a reference for changing the FM antenna.

2-receiver technology function

The two (integrated) radio receivers in the audio tuner control unit automatically generate, after the COMAND controller unit is switched on, a list of the FM stations received, which is constantly updated during operation.

Station selection options are:

Satellite digital audio radio (satellite radio) (SDAR) (with code (536) SIRIUS satellite radio)

Together with SDAR, the SDAR control unit and the SDAR antenna are installed in the vehicle. The SDAR control unit permits, in combination with the SDAR antenna, the reception of stations from the provider "Sirius satellite radio".

DVD and CD mode, function

The COMAND controller unit is equipped with an integrated CD/DVD drive that can be used to play audio CDs and DVDs and navigation media. It is also possible to play audio data in MP3 format.

In addition to playing back audio signals, the COMAND controller unit provides the following functions in DVD and CD mode:

In addition to the listed functions, supplemental information is shown on the COMAND display (e.g. playing time, track list and name of the performer). The COMAND display receives the control commands from the COMAND controller unit via the telematics CAN.

DVD changer mode (with code (814) DVD changer)

The DVD changer is integrated in the COMAND controller unit and is operated via the COMAND controller unit.

IMPORTANT The media that can be played in the DVD changer of the COMAND controller unit also include audio CDs and audio DVDs in MP3 format.
