Media interface function - GF82.60-P-2020LE
MODEL 216 with CODE (518) Media interface as of model year 2010/YoM 09
MODEL 221 with CODE (518) Media interface as of model year 2010/YoM 09 model refinement package
Function requirements, general
- Circuit 30g ON
Media interface, general
The media interface function is also called the "Universal Consumer Electronic Interface".
The following portable devices can be connected to this universal consumer electronic interface cable using an adapter cable:
- AUX unit (class 1) (e.g. MP3-player)
- "iPod"
- Universal serial bus (USB) unit ("Device Subclass 6") (e.g. USB sticks, USB hard disks)
The cinch jacks in the glove box have been discontinued.
The adapter cable, media interface connector 1 (X18/67), media interface control unit (N125/1) and Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) are used to connect the portable terminal to the COMAND controller unit (A40/3).
The following data formats are supported:
- MP3 (up to 320 kbit/s)
- Windows Media Audio (WMA) (up to 320 kbit/s)
If the COMAND controller unit does not support the connected portable device, the portable device is deep discharged or the media interface connector 1 is defective, a corresponding message is issued via the COMAND display (A40/8) (without code (867) SPLITVIEW or the SPLITVIEW display (A40/10) with code (867) SPLITVIEW).
The portable device is operated via menu guidance in the COMAND controller unit, which can be operated via one of the following components:
- COMAND control unit
- Front central operating unit (A40/9)
- Left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111)
Function sequence for media interface
The media interface control unit detects portable terminals (only "iPod" and USB) when connecting and sends a signal to the COMAND controller unit which then switches to the connected source.
The user can now have the audio data displayed by selecting the relevant submenu:
- "Media interface" menu
- "Play lists"
- "Artists"
- "Albums"
- "Genres" or "Audio books"
The menu system is displayed on the COMAND display or via the SPLITVIEW display and varies depending on the portable device connected:
Selection of the "Media interface" menu item and the specific submenus is possible using one of the following controls:
- Buttons on the COMAND controller unit
- Front central operating unit
- Multifunction steering wheel button groups
The control signals from the buttons of the COMAND control unit are processed internally.
The settings via the front central operating unit are transmitted to the COMAND controller unit via the telematics CAN (CAN A).
The control signals of the multifunction steering wheel button groups are transferred to the COMAND control unit over the following path:
- Steering LIN (LIN E1)
- Steering column tube module (N80)
- Chassis CAN (CAN E)
- Central gateway control unit (N93)
- Central CAN (CAN F)
After the COMAND controller unit has processed the control signals, it transmits the corresponding requests to the portable terminal over the following route:
- MOST
- Media interface control unit
- Media interface connector 1
- Adapter cable
The audio signals and data are transmitted from the connected portable device to the COMAND controller unit over the following route:
- Adapter cable
- Media interface connector 1
- Media interface control unit
- MOST
The video signals are sent through a coaxial line to the COMAND controller unit. The video signals are then processed internally by the COMAND controller unit and sent to the COMAND display or to the SPLITVIEW display over a low voltage differential signaling (LVDS) line.
The audio signals are output over the vehicle's speaker system. To this end, the COMAND controller unit sends the audio signals over MOST to the audio tuner control unit (N93/1) or the digital sound processor (A2/69) (model 221 as of 1.9.10 with code (811) Advanced Sound System), which correspondingly processes and amplifies the audio signals before emitting them through the vehicle's speaker system.
On model 216 the speaker system comprises the following components:
- Left door speaker group (H4/1) (without code (810) Sound system)
- Right door speaker group (H4/2) (without code (810) Sound system)
- Left door rear speaker (H4/3)
- Right door rear speaker (H4/4)
- Bass module speaker (H4/17)
- Center cockpit speaker (centerfill) (H4/27)

- Right door sound tweeter (H4/69)
- Left door sound woofer and midrange speaker group (H4/72)
- Right door sound woofer and midrange speaker group (H4/73)
On model 221 without code (810) Sound system or code (811) Advanced Sound System (as of 1.9.10) the speaker system comprises the following components:
- Left front door speaker group (H4/1)
- Right front door speaker group (H4/2)
- Left rear door speaker group (H4/3)
- Right rear door speaker group (H4/4)
