Volume/tone adjustments, general
The functionalities for the volume and tone settings as well as for the amplification of the audio signals run in the audio tuner control unit (N93/1) or in the digital sound processor (A2/69) (model 221 as of 1.9.10 with code (811) Advanced Sound System) before the audio signals are emitted through the speaker system. The functionalities are controlled by the COMAND control unit (A40/3). The current settings for volume and tone are displayed on the COMAND display (A40/8) (without code (867) SPLITVIEW) or on the SPLITVIEW display (A40/10) (with code (867) SPLITVIEW).
The volume and tone settings can be made using the following components:
- "+" and "-" button, for setting specific functions and volume control (S111s1) in the right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111)
- Volume control (A40/9r1) and rotary push-button (A40/9s11) at the front central operating unit (A40/9)
- Voice control system (VCS [SBS]) (up to 31.5.09 with code (813) Voice control system (VCS [SBS]) as of 1.6.09)
For vehicles with code (810) Sound system or with model 221 (as of 1.9.10) with code (811) Advanced Sound System the COMAND controller unit not only controls the general tone settings (bass, treble, balance and fader) it also comes with the "Surround Sound (Logic 7)" setting.
The COMAND controller unit sends the audio signals over the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) to the audio tuner control unit or the digital sound processor (model 221 as of 1.9.10 with code (811) Advanced Sound System), which amplifies them and emits them through the speaker system.
The speaker system in model 216 comprises the following components:
- Left door speaker group (H4/1) (without code (810) Sound system)
- Right door speaker group (H4/2) (without code (810) Sound system)
- Left door rear speaker (H4/3)
- Right door rear speaker (H4/4)

The speaker system in model 221 (as of 1.9.10) with code (811) Advanced Sound System comprises the following components:
- Speaker Left front door (H4/5)
- Right front door speaker (H4/6)
- Bass module speaker
- Center cockpit speaker (centerfill)
- Left front door tweeter (H4/33)
- Right front door tweeter (H4/34)
- Left rear door tweeter (H4/35)
- Right rear door tweeter (H4/36)
- Left rear surround speaker
- Right rear surround speaker
- Left front door woofer (H4/64)
- Right front door woofer (H4/65)
- Left rear door woofer (H4/66)
- Right rear door woofer (H4/67)
The woofers and bass box speaker on model 221 (as of 1.9.10) with code (811) Advanced Sound System are actuated by the sound amplifier (A2/13), which is controlled by the digital sound processor.
The volume and sound settings are subdivided into the following partial functions:
- Function sequence for manual volume/sound settings
- Function sequence for speed-dependent volume control (SDV) and dynamic range optimization (DRO) (DRO with code (811) Advanced Sound System (model 221 as of 1.9.10) and up to 31.5.09 with code (810) Sound system)
Function sequence for manual volume/sound settings
The manual volume/sound settings are subdivided into the following subfunctions:
- Function sequence for volume/tone settings via the right multifunction steering wheel button group
- Function sequence for volume/tone settings via the front central operating unit
Function sequence for volume settings via the right multifunction steering wheel button group
Pressing the "+" and "-" button for setting specific functions and volume control allows the volume for the desired audio function to be increased or decreased.
The control signals from the "+" and "-" button, setting of specific functions and volume control are forwarded as follows to the audio tuner control unit or the digital sound processor (model 221 as of 1.9.10 with code (811) Advanced Sound System):
- Steering LIN (LIN E1)
- Steering column tube module (N80)
- Chassis CAN (CAN E)
- Central gateway control unit (N93)
- Central CAN (CAN F)
- COMAND control unit
- Media Oriented System Transport (MOST)
Function sequence for volume/tone settings via the front central operating unit
The front central operating unit enables the volume for the desired audio function to be increased or reduced by pressing the volume control.
The tone settings can be selected using the rotary push-button in the "Tone" menu in the function bar of the COMAND display (without code (867) SPLITVIEW) or the SPLITVIEW display (with code (867) SPLITVIEW).
The audio tuner control unit or the digital sound processor (model 221 as of 1.9.10 with code (811) Advanced Sound System) enables manual tone settings to be made for each audio source. The tone settings configured for the radio mode are simultaneously valid for any traffic announcements. When changing the sound emphasis (balance, fader), the ratio of the volume of the individual speakers or speaker groups changes.
The control signals of the front central operating unit are sent over the following path to the audio tuner control unit or the digital sound processor (model 221 as of 1.9.10 with code (811) Advanced Sound System):
- Telematics CAN
- COMAND control unit
- MOST
Changing the volume of an audio source has an identical effect on all other audio sources. The volume is also jointly regulated within the output sources in the same manner. Predefined settings can be selected and reset to the manufacturer default setting via the system settings.
Function sequence for speed-dependent volume control (SDV) and dynamic range optimization (DRO) (DRO with code (811) Advanced Sound System (model 221 as of 1.9.10) and up to 31.5.09 with code (810) Sound system)
The speed-dependent volume control can be used to adapt the volume to the noise level in the vehicle interior. In this case, the vehicle speed signal is used as the reference value. This procedure will run automatically. After evaluating the relationship indicator, the audio output is matched to the noise level in the vehicle interior. Depending on the vehicle speed signal, the audio tuner control unit or the digital sound processor (model 221 as of 1.9.10 with code (811) Advanced Sound System) raises or lowers the sound level of the audio signals.
The audio tuner control unit or the digital sound processor (model 221 as of 1.9.10 with code (811) Advanced Sound System) receives the vehicle speed signal for the SDV over the following path:
- Instrument cluster (A1)
- Central CAN
- COMAND control unit
- MOST
For vehicles with code (810) Sound system up to 31.5.09 or for model 221 as of 1.9.10 with code (811) Advanced Sound System, the volume is also adapted to the noise level in the vehicle interior using the automatic vehicle interior noise adaptation dynamic range optimization. The vehicle speed signal and signal input are also used by the sound amplifier microphone (B25/6) as relationship indicators here. The microphone signal is directly read in and evaluated by the audio tuner control unit or the digital sound processor (model 221 as of 1.9.10 with code (811) Advanced Sound System).
