Remove/install knock sensors - AR15.12-P-2184R

ENGINES 275 in MODELS 215, 216, 220, 221, 230

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Turn key in electronic ignition switch control unit to position "0" IMPORTANT Vehicles with code (889) Keyless Go: Press the start/stop button repeatedly until the ignition is switched off.  
2 Remove lower engine compartment paneling Model 215, 220 AR61.20-P-1105M

Model 221 without code (Z07) Top protection

Model 230 except special model "AMG Black Series" AR61.20-P-1105R

  Left front knock sensor     
3 Disconnect electrical connector for front knock sensor (left side of engine) (A29/1)    
4 Remove bolt (2) and remove front knock sensor (left side of engine) (A29/1) TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA15.10-P-1001-02B 
  Left rear knock sensor     
5 Remove complete exhaust system Model 230 AR49.10-P-7000RB
6 Remove heat shield (22) Model 230  
7 Remove bolts (1a) and take out heat shield (1). Model 230  
TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA15.10-P-1002-02B 
8 Disconnect electrical connector for rear knock sensor (left side of engine) (A29/2)    
9 Remove bolt (2) and remove rear knock sensor (left side of engine) (A29/2) TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA15.10-P-1001-02B 
  Right front knock sensor     
10 Remove right engine support Model 215, 220 AR22.10-P-4320IX
Model 216, 221 AR22.10-P-1260SZ
Model 230 AR22.10-P-1260R
11 Disconnect electrical connector for front knock sensor (right side of engine) (A30/1)    
12 Remove bolt (2) and remove front knock sensor (left side of engine) (A30/1) TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA15.10-P-1001-02B 
  Right rear knock sensor     
DANGER Risk of explosion  caused by oxyhydrogen gas. Risk of poisoning and caustic burns  caused by swallowing battery acid. Risk of injury  caused by burns to skin and eyes from battery acid or when handling damaged lead-acid batteries No fire, sparks, open flames or smoking.
Wear acid-resistant gloves, clothing and glasses. Only pour battery acid into suitable and appropriately marked containers.

13 Disconnect ground line(s) at battery(ies) Model 215, 220 AR54.10-P-0003I

14.1 Remove complete exhaust system Model 230 AR49.10-P-7000RB
14.2 Remove right catalytic converter Model 215, 220 AR49.10-P-5500M
14.3 Remove heat shield from starter Model 216, 221  
See Remove/install starter. AR15.30-P-7100SZ 
15 Disconnect electrical connector for rear knock sensor (right side of engine) (A30/2)    
16 Remove bolt (2) and remove rear knock sensor (right side of engine) (A30/2) TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA15.10-P-1001-02B 
17 Install in the reverse order    
18 Read out fault memory and erase if necessary IMPORTANT Faults which may have been caused by disconnecting wires or by a simulation must be erased in the fault memory after completing the work.  
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS Connect STAR DIAGNOSIS and read out fault memory AD00.00-P-2000-04A
