Disconnect/connect battery's ground cable - AR54.10-P-0003R

  Disconnect, connect    
DANGER Risk of explosion  caused by oxyhydrogen gas. Risk of poisoning and caustic burns  caused by swallowing battery acid. Risk of injury  caused by burns to skin and eyes from battery acid or when handling damaged lead-acid batteries No fire, sparks, open flames or smoking. Wear acid-resistant gloves, clothing and safety glasses. Only pour battery acid into suitable and appropriately marked containers. AS54.10-Z-0001-01A

1 Switch off all electrical consumers    
2 Switch off the ignition and remove the transmitter key from the EIS control unit IMPORTANT On vehicles with code (889) Keyless Go, press the Keyless Go start/stop button repeatedly until the ignition is switched off. Remove the Keyless Go transmitter card or transmitter key from the vehicle and store beyond the reach of the transmitter (min. 2 m).  
3 Unhook trunk partition    
4 Remove spare wheel cover    
5 Loosen nut and disconnect ground line (1) from the on-board electrical system battery (G1)   *BA54.10-P-1012-01C 
6 Open engine hood and raise to vertical position   AR88.40-P-1000R
7 Unfasten nut and detach ground cable (2) from starter battery (G1/4) NOTES Before disconnecting the ground line (2) from the starter battery (G1/4) the ground line (1) must be disconnected from the on-board electrical system battery (G1) otherwise the components of the electrical system may become damaged.  
8 Connect in the reverse order. IMPORTANT All electrical consumers must be switched off.  
9 Perform basic programming   AR00.19-P-0200R
10 Read fault memory, erase if necessary On model 230.4 up to 14.1.04.  
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS Connect STAR DIAGNOSIS and read out fault memory   AD00.00-P-2000-04A
