Location
The fully integrated transmission control unit (VGS) is integrated in the electric controller unit (VGS) which is located in the oil pan at the bottom of the transmission.
Task
General
The fully integrated transmission control (VGS) control unit determines the instantaneous operating condition of the vehicle and actuates all gear change sequences taking ease of shifting and driving situation into consideration.
Flash programming
The transmission control system in the fully integrated transmission control unit (VGS) is flash programmable i.e. the complete software in the control unit can be replaced (installed new). The software required to program the control units is stored on the STAR DIAGNOSIS DAS Update DVD.
CAN data bus
The fully integrated transmission control unit (VGS) is connected to the CAN network of the vehicle via the drive train CAN (CAN-C) and exchanges data with other control units.

The BAS release switch (A7/7s1) will be replaced by the brake light switch (S9/1) in model 221 as of 2.6.09 and in model 216 as of 1.9.10. In vehicles with code (233) DISTRONIC PLUS and Code (239) Adaptive cruise control Plus Light, the BAS release switch is still used.
