Function requirements:
- Power supply okay
- Controller Area Network (data bus/CAN bus) and Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) active
- Portable CTEL (A34/6) inserted into UPCI [UHI] portable CTEL holder (Universal Handy Interface)
- Enabled Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) card inserted in portable CTEL
- Correct Personal Identification Number (PIN) entry and successful log-in in to the respective mobile telephone network of the service provider
The combination of the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit and the relevant UPCI [UHI] portable CTEL holder (Universal Portable CTEL Interface) makes it possible to operate different portable CTELs (e.g. Motorola). In addition, it is also possible to operate devices with Bluetooth capability (e.g. laptop).
The Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) system is provided as a dealer option kit. It also contains the voice control system (VCS).
Phone calls can be made in "private mode" using a Bluetooth headset.
The following components are always preinstalled in the vehicle:
- Telephone and GPS roof antenna incl. wiring
- Bluetooth antenna incl. wiring
- Interior wiring to Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit
- Wiring from Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit to center console
- Wiring to portable CTEL antenna amplifier
The Dealer Option Kit contains the following components:
- Portable CTEL antenna amplifier
- Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit
- UPCI [UHI] portable CTEL holder (Universal Portable CTEL Interface) and the portable CTEL
The UPCI [UHI] system consists of the following components:
- Instrument Cluster

The UPCI system contains the following functions:
- Establish phone calls in hands-free mode
- Display call numbers and caller ID
- Display stored telephone numbers from the portable CTEL or the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster (A1p13) and in the COMAND display
- Selection of the menu item "TEL" using the system selection button over the left multifunction steering wheel button group
- Selection of the menu item "TEL" via the front central operating unit
- Scrolling (telephone directory function) using the scroll forward and back button over the left multifunction steering wheel button group
- Selection of the "Accept/terminate phone call" function over the right multifunction steering wheel button group using the Accept/terminate phone call button
- All audio signals transmitted via the MOST bus
- Voice control, voice input is made via the hands-free system microphone group. The volume of any active audio source is automatically muted during a telephone call to ensure minimum distortion to the voice input by the user via the hands-free system microphone group
- The UPCI [UHI] system is activated using the On/Off button on the portable CTEL or automatically by a wake-up pulse over the MOST. Automatic activation can be initiated via the COMAND controller unit or the status "circuit 15 ON"
- The UPCI [UHI] system can be deactivated using the On/Off button on the portable CTEL or automatically after expiration of the run-on time set on the portable CTEL
- Voice output is accomplished over the audio speaker system
- Display of provider name in COMAND display.
The volume of the audio speaker system can be set individually by the user. This is possible using the MFL's integrated buttons + and - for setting specific functions and volume control or using the portable CTEL.
Several displays (e.g. "ENTER PIN"), which inform the user about the operating condition of the portable CTEL, are used to show the functions in the following components:
