Check and correct the adjustment of the headlamps - AP82.10-P-8260A

MODEL 124, 129, 140, 202 

MODEL 170, 208, 210 except CODE (491) USA version 

Model 124 

  1. a Marking for low beams/high beams 
  2. c Marking for fog lamps or model 124.036 high beams 

Model 129 

  1. Marking for low beams/high beams 

Model 140 (up to approx. 02.94) model 202 (sedan up to approx. 05/96) 

  1. Marking for low beams 
  2. Marking for high beams 
  3. Marking for fog lamps (except coupe) 

Model 140 (as of approx. 03.94) model 170, model 202 (sedan as of approx. 06/96 and T-model)

INSPECT Check     
DANGER Risk of death  caused by high voltage levels present at xenon headlamps.
Risk of explosion/fire hazard  due to highly flammable substances in the area of damaged xenon bulbs
Risk of injury  due to UV light, hot components on xenon headlamps and glass splinters when xenon bulbs burst
Risk of poisoning  caused by inhalation of mercury vapors and by toxic salts and mercury compounds being ingested or coming into contact with skin
Do not come into contact with parts that are under high voltage. Persons with active electronic implants  (e.g. heart pacemakers) must never work on xenon headlamps. Switch off entire lighting system. Wear insulated safety shoes, safety glasses and protective gloves. Remove highly inflammable materials from the hazard area. Ensure sufficient ventilation in the working area. AS82.10-Z-0001-01A
DANGER Risk of accident  caused by vehicle starting off by itself when engine is running. Risk of injury  caused by contusions and burns during starting procedure or when working near the engine as it is running Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving by itself.
Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes.
Do not touch hot or rotating parts.

1 Check tire inflation pressure, correct if necessary    
2 Park the vehicle on a horizontal, level surface IMPORTANT Vehicle must be in curb condition (curb weight, fuel tank full or corresponding additional weight).
The vehicle level must not change when the brakes are applied.
 
3 One person to occupy the driver seat or load the seat with 75 kg Except vehicles with code 491 USA version or vehicles with level control or ADS  
4 Start engine and run at moderate speed for approx. 30 s IMPORTANT On vehicles with level control or ADS. Move vehicle back and forward in order to adjust the axle setting.  
5.1 Align headlamp adjustment testing unit to vehicle and adjust height according to marking in lens Model 124, 129, 140, 170, 202
IMPORTANT Precisely observe operating instructions for headlamp adjustment testing unit.

5.2 Align headlamp adjustment testing unit to the vehicle and carry out height setting according to middle of the lens Model 170, 208, 210

6 Run engine and switch on low beam    
7.1 Check headlamp range control for proper function IMPORTANT With standard headlamps.
Except vehicles with code 491 USA version
IMPORTANT Both light beams of the headlamps must be evenly adjusted. Headlamp range adjustment inoperative:

7.2 Check function of headlamp range adjustment through placement of additional weights in the luggage compartment IMPORTANT With xenon headlamps.

REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS Electric headlamp range adjustment (HRA) diagnosis, function check Model 202, 208, 210 AD82.10-P-3000A
8.1 Move switch of headlamp range control into position 0    
8.2 Remove additional weights IMPORTANT With xenon headlamps.  
9 Check low beams and adjust if necessary Except vehicles with code 491 USA version AP82.10-P-8260-01A
    Vehicles with code 491 USA version, model 129, 140, 202 up to approx. 03/96
IMPORTANT Due to the common reflector unit on model 140 sedan as of approx. 03.94 and model 202 the low beams, high beams and fog lamps are simultaneously adjusted.
Due to the common reflector unit on model 170 the low beams and fog lamps are adjusted simultaneously.
Vehicles with code 491 USA version, model 210 and 208, 129, 140, 170, 202 as of approx. 04/96, model 210: ↓
