General
The electronic compass makes orientation in road traffic easier for the driver. The electronic compass measures the direction of the near-earth magnetic field and can then determine the current direction of travel.
The driver displays the direction of travel (N, NW, W, SW, S, SE, E or NE) of the vehicle on the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster by selecting the menu item "Offroad display" on the instrument cluster (A1).
The "Display compass" function consists of the following subfunction:

Operating instruction
The electronic compass is displayed on the multifunction display of the instrument cluster by selecting the "Offroad display" menu in the instrument cluster using the left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111).
Display of electronic compass, function sequence
The electronic compass measures the direction of the near-earth magnetic field and sends the direction information cyclically (every t = 1 s) to the instrument cluster via the interior CAN.
The electronic compass is displayed on the multifunction display of the instrument cluster by selecting the "Offroad display" menu in the instrument cluster using the multifunction steering wheel button groups.
The control signals of the multifunction steering wheel button groups are forwarded to the instrument cluster via the following path:
- Steering LIN
- Steering column tube module (N80)
- Engine compartment CAN
Incorrect directions of travel can be displayed in the vicinity of large buildings, bridges, power lines, radio towers or antenna masts.
