Control/warning messages, function - GF54.30-P-2001GM
MODEL 164.1 as of model year 2009
MODEL 164.8, 251.0/1 as of model year 2009
Function requirements, general
- Circuit 15R ON
The EZS control unit (N73) sends the circuit 15 status over the interior CAN (CAN B) to the instrument cluster (A1).
Control/warning messages, general
The instrument cluster indicator and warning messages notify the driver about the current states of the systems installed in the vehicle.
The instrument cluster can issue indicator and warning messages in the following ways:
- Optical output of control/warning messages:
- Multifunction display (A1p13)
- Indicator/warning lamps
- Acoustic output of control/warning messages
- Warning buzzer (A1h1)
- Audible turn signal indicator (A1h2) (turn signal clicking)
The warning messages shown on the multifunction display are divided up into three categories:
- Category 1 (warning messages with highest priority): These warning messages cannot be acknowledged. When they occur, a brief warning is emitted by the buzzer. Any category 2 and 3 warning messages are cross-faded.
- Category 2 (warning messages with medium priority): These warning messages are information displays or system information, and they can be acknowledged by pressing the trip odometer reset button (A1s3).
When they occur, a brief warning is emitted by the buzzer. Any category 3 warning messages are hidden.
- Category 3 (warning messages with lowest priority):
These warning messages are menu displays and they can be acknowledged using the trip odometer reset button.
There is no acoustic warning.
Warning messages with lower priority are overlaid by warning messages with higher priority. If several messages with the same priority occur the message currently displayed is overlaid by the new message after a minimum display time of t = 5 s has elapsed.
Function sequence for control/warning messages
The instrument cluster informs the driver about the functionality and status of the installed vehicle systems. Safety-relevant system activities and system malfunctions are shown to the driver in the form of control and warning messages in the instrument cluster.
The following display options are provided for this purpose:
- Visual:
- Indicator lamps (green, yellow or blue)
- Warning lamps (red)
- Multifunction display
- Acoustic:
- Warning buzzer

Special case of country-dependent seat belt reminder warning
If, immediately prior to starting a journey or during a journey, a seat belt is detected to be not fitted, the instrument cluster issues a country-specific optical and acoustic seat belt reminder warning.
The restraint system control unit (N2/7) sends information on the seat belt status over the engine compartment CAN to the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster evaluates this information for issuing a country-specific seat belt reminder warning.
The seat belt reminder message for the front passenger is only issued, if the front passenger seat is recognized as occupied. The information on seat occupancy recognition is sent on vehicles without code (494) USA version by the restraint system control unit over the engine compartment-CAN to the instrument cluster or for vehicles with code (494) USA version by the Weight Sensing System (WSS) control unit (N2/13) over the interior CAN to the instrument cluster.
The manner of how the seat belt reminder warning is issued differs in whether the seat belt reminder warning is prescribed by law or not and is incorporated into the assessment through the New Car Assessment Program (NCAP).
NCAP is a program for assessing the safety of new vehicles. Countries with legally prescribed seat belt reminder:
- Extended NCAP:
Japan, USA, Canada, Arab States of the Gulf, Korea
- Countries with no legally prescribed seat belt reminder:
European New Car Assessment Program (Euro NCAP): Europe, China, Australia
In countries in which the seat belt reminder warning is prescribed by law, the seat belt warning lamp (A1e9) is actuated for a time interval of t = 6 ±2 s. It is irrelevant here whether the driver seat belt is fitted or not.
If the driver's seat belt is not being worn, the instrument cluster also issues an acoustic warning over the warning buzzer.
If the driver seat belt is fastened during this time interval, the acoustic warning stops sounding. An assessment of whether the front passenger seat belt is fitted or not given during this time interval. Only after the time interval of t = 6 ± 2 s has expired, does the assessment of both seat belts occur. In countries in which the seat belt reminder warning is not prescribed by law, the seat belt warning lamp is only actuated during the indicator lamp test.
Immediately after detecting that the engine is running (circuit 61) information on the driver and front passenger seat belt status is evaluated. If a seat belt is defined to not be fitted, the instrument cluster actuates the seat belt warning lamp. If the vehicle starts to move, several successive acoustic warnings are issued once it reaches a speed of v ≥ 25 km/h.
Three or four acoustic warnings are issued in accordance with the seat belt reminder warning. While they are being issued the seat belt warning lamp is actuated at a frequency of f = 1 Hz.
- Acoustic warning phase 1:
If the vehicle drives off, acoustic warning phase 1 starts to run in the background. When a speed of v ≥ 25 km/h is reached, a quiet acoustic warning is sounded at an interval of t = 4 s. The acoustic warning phase 1 lasts for a maximum t = 20 s whereupon acoustic warning phase 2 starts.
- Acoustic warning phase 2:
After expiry of acoustic warning phase 1 and at a speed of v 25 km/h a quiet acoustic warning is sounded for maximum t = 20 s at an interval of t = 2 s this is then followed by acoustic warning phase 3.
- Acoustic warning phase 3:
After expiry of acoustic warning phase 2 and at a speed of v 25 km/h a quiet acoustic warning is sounded for maximum t = 20 s at an interval of t = 1 s this is then followed by acoustic warning phase 4.
- Acoustic warning phase 4 (Euro-NCAP only):
Following expiry of acoustic warning phase 3 and at a speed of v 25 km/h, a loud acoustic warning is sounded for maximum t = 93 s at an interval of t = 0.5 s.
When an acoustic warning is emitted the seat belt warning lamp is actuated and it flashes on and off. Once all the acoustic warning phases have been passed through it is actuated permanently. Actuation of seat belt warning lamp:
- Extended NCAP:
The seat belt warning lamp is actuated for a period of t = 6 2 s until the vehicle reaches a speed of v > 25 km/h. As from this speed the seat belt seat belt warning lamp starts to flash on and off until the driver or front passenger seat belt is recognized to be inserted (with recognized seat occupancy).
- Euro NCAP:
As from a speed of v > 25 km/h the seat belt warning lamp starts to flash on and off until the driver or front passenger seat belt is recognized to be inserted.
The seat belt reminder warning is deactivated under the following circumstances:
- Last acoustic warning phase run through completely
- Driver seat belt or front passenger seat belt fitted in the meantime
- Door on passenger side opened, at which the seat belt reminder warning was triggered (driver seat belt reminder warning = driver door, front passenger seat belt reminder warning = front passenger door) at vehicle standstill
The seat belt reminder warning is activated again under the following circumstances:
- When the seat belt is removed again
- Vehicle at standstill and driver or front passenger door is opened and then closed again
- An ignition sequence is detected again when the engine is running or at circuit 15 ON (with code (498) Japan version)
The seat belt reminder warning for the rear passengers is realized by monitoring the total number of belt tabs inserted into the seat belt buckles in the rear.
