Volume/tone adjustments, general

All volume and tone settings are made using the radio and navigation unit (A2/56). This is performed either by the user or automatically by the speed-dependent volume control (SDV [GAL]). The volume and sound setting function can be conducted as follows:

In addition to the general tone settings such as bass, treble, balance and fader, the radio and navigation unit on vehicles with code (810) Sound system also has the "Logic 7" surround sound function.

As of 1.7.09: With audio source "Aux" (via media interface adapter cable (with code (518) Media Interface) or standard aux socket), selection "Standard" and "Boost" is possible under the "Volume" menu. The input level is increased by selecting "Boost".

The volume/tone settings can be made using the following components:

Using the buttons + and - for setting specific functions and volume control (S111s1) on the multifunction steering wheel (MFL)
Using the rotary switch of the radio and navigation unit
Using the rotary switch and control buttons on the radio and navigation unit

By pressing the + and - button, for setting specific functions and volume control, the volume for the desired audio function to be increased or decreased.

The control signals are forwarded to the radio and navigation unit via the following route:

Steering LIN (LIN E1)
Steering column module (N80)
Engine compartment CAN (CAN C)
Instrument cluster (A1)
Interior CAN (CAN B)

Function sequence for general volume setting using the rotary switch of the radio and navigation unit

The rotary switch of the radio and navigation unit can be used to set the volume. The control signals are read in and evaluated internally in the radio and navigation unit.

Function sequence for general, extra tone settings using the control buttons of the radio and navigation unit

The rotary actuator of the radio and navigation unit can be used to manually set the volume and the tone (bass, treble, balance, fader as well as tone options) for each audio source. The required tone settings can be made using the "Tone" menu. They can be set separately for each function (e.g. CD, radio reception, traffic announcements).

The control signals are read in and evaluated within the radio and navigation unit. The desired settings are transferred to the amplifier for sound system (N40/3) via the Media Oriented Transport System (MOST) in vehicles with code (810) Sound system, and vehicles with code (810) Sound system also have the "Logic 7" surround sound option.

If the tone emphasis is changed (balance, fader) the volume relationship between the individual speakers changes relative to each other.

For vehicles without code (810) Sound system, the selected settings are processed internally, amplified and then emitted at the speaker system.

Function sequence for speed-dependent volume control

The speed-dependent volume control can be used to adapt the volume to the noise level in the vehicle interior. In this case, the vehicle speed signal is used as the reference value. This procedure will run automatically. After evaluating the relationship indicator, the audio output is matched to the noise level in the vehicle interior. Depending on the vehicle speed signal, the radio and navigation unit raises or lowers the output level of the audio signals.

The vehicle speed signal is forwarded to the radio and navigation unit via the following route:

On vehicles with code (810) Sound system, the audio signals are output by the radio and navigation unit via the MOST to the amplifier for the sound system and from there, to the following speakers via direct lines:

The audio signal for the subwoofer (H4/29) travels from the radio and navigation unit to the amplifier for the sound system via MOST and from there, via direct lines to the subwoofer amplifier (N40/9) and then to the subwoofer speaker.

On vehicles without code (810) Sound system, the audio signals are output by the radio and navigation unit to the following speakers via direct lines:

Left front door speaker
Right front door speaker
Left rear door speaker
Right rear door speaker
Left front door tweeter
Right front door tweeter
Left rear door tweeter
Right rear door tweeter
