Function requirements for automatic interior lights control, general 

Automatic interior lights control in general 

The automatic interior lights control implements the actuation of all components of the interior illumination as well as the entrance and exit illumination.

The appropriate requests are generated automatically. The master control unit for the automatic interior lights control is the overhead control panel control unit (N70).

The automatic interior lights control is composed of the following subfunctions:

Locator lighting function sequence 

To control the ambient illumination, the following information is read in and evaluated by the overhead control panel control unit:

The overhead control panel control unit evaluates all incoming information and actuates the following interior illumination components:

The overhead control panel control unit also transmits the request to switch on the footwell illumination to the front SAM control unit (N10) via the interior CAN.

The front SAM control unit then actuates the following footwell illumination components with the set brightness value for the symbol illumination:

If the function is requested by unlocking the central locking, the interior illumination is switched off after t = 30 s or immediately, if the vehicle is locked again within t = 3 s of unlocking it. After the last vehicle door is closed, the interior illumination is switched off with circuit 15 OFF after t = 8 s and with circuit 15 ON immediately. If the function is requested by intentionally leaving the vehicle, the interior illumination is switched off in accordance with the OFF delay time that has been activated via the instrument cluster (A1).

The OFF delay time can only be switched on and off and is t = 10 s.

IMPORTANT In vehicles as of 1.7.11, the shutoff of the interior illumination upon vehicle locking can be activated or deactivated in the instrument cluster via the submenu "Illumination" of the "Settings" menu.

IMPORTANT For vehicles with code (889) Keyless-Go, circuit 15C is deactivated when a vehicle door is opened. The interior illumination is switched off after expiry of t = 8 s after closing the last vehicle door or when a vehicle door is open after t = 5 minutes.

IMPORTANT If the ambient illumination function has been activated via the instrument cluster, it automatically switches itself on when the vehicle is unlocked using the transmitter key.

This causes the "Standing lights actuation active" signal to be set, which also activates the search and symbol illumination. The search and symbol illumination function is described in a separate service information called "Symbol and ambiance illumination function".

Function sequence for entrance and exit illumination 

To control the entrance and exit illumination, the following information is read in and evaluated by the overhead control panel control unit:

The opening of a vehicle door is defined by the status of the following components:

The status of the rear-end door is defined by the rear-end door locking unit.

The rear SAM control units reads in the corresponding status and transmits it over the interior CAN to the overhead control panel control unit.

The overhead control panel control unit evaluates this and transmits the switch-on request for the entrance and exit illumination as well as the footwell illumination via the interior CAN to the following control units:

The left front door control unit actuates the following entrance and exit illumination components:

The right front door control unit actuates the following entrance and exit illumination components:

The rear SAM control unit actuates the following entrance and exit illumination components:

The overhead control panel control unit actuates the following interior illumination components:

The front SAM control unit actuates the footwell lamps with the brightness value, equivalent to 100 %.

If all vehicle doors are closed again and if the EZS control unit supplies circuit 15 ON status on the interior CAN, the interior illumination is switched off. The footwell lamps are then actuated again at the set brightness value for the symbol illumination.

IMPORTANT To preserve the battery (G1), with a circuit status of circuit 15 Off and a vehicle door is open, all activated lights are switched off after t = 5 min. or t = 8 s after the last vehicle door has been closed.

If the rear-end door remains open, the rear-end door warning lamp and the rear-end door ambient lamp are automatically switched off after t = 10 min. If the function is requested by intentionally exiting the vehicle, the rear-end door warning lamp and the rear-end door ambient lamp are switched off in accordance with the OFF delay time that has been activated in the instrument cluster.

Additional load compartment illumination function requirements

In order to control the load compartment illumination, the status of the rear-end door is read in by the rear SAM control unit and made available on the interior CAN.

In accordance with this status, the rear SAM control unit actuates the following components:

The overhead control panel control unit receives the status of the rear-end door and also actuates the following components:

The rear-end door warning lamp and the rear-end door ambient lamp are also actuated (with code (876) Interior lights package or without code (890) EASY-PACK liftgate) in accordance with the status of the rain/light sensor, which is made available on the interior CAN by the overhead control panel control unit.

IMPORTANT To preserve the battery, with a circuit status of circuit 15 Off and a vehicle door is open, all activated lights are switched off after t = 5 min. or t = 8 s after the last vehicle door has been closed.

If the rear-end door is opened, the trunk lamp is automatically switched off after t = 10 min.

If the function is requested by intentionally leaving the vehicle, the trunk lamp is switched off in accordance with the OFF delay time that has been activated via the instrument cluster.

The rear SAM control unit transmits the "ATA alarm activated" signal to the overhead control panel control unit and the front SAM control unit via the interior CAN.

The overhead control panel control unit then actuates the following interior illumination components:

The rear SAM control unit actuates the following components:

The front SAM control unit actuates the footwell lamps.

Function sequence for interior illumination following an accident with airbag deployment 

The interior illumination is actuated in order to provide better orientation for the occupants and the first air personnel following an accident.

The restraint systems control unit (N2/7) places the "Crash event" information on the engine compartment CAN (CAN C).

The central gateway control unit (N93) receives the information and makes it available to the overhead control panel control unit on the interior CAN.

The overhead control panel control unit then transmits the request to switch on the footwell illumination, and actuates the following components:

The front SAM control unit receives the request from the overhead control panel control unit and actuates the footwell lamps with a brightness value that corresponds to 100 %.

The interior illumination function following an accident with airbag deployment is deactivated under the following conditions:
