The SDAR control unit is installed in the model designation 164.1 at the left and in model designation 164.8 in the center, under the 2nd seat row. The associated SDAR antenna (A2/93a5) is integrated in the roof antenna module (A2/93).

The SDAR antenna receives the signals from satellites and from terrestrial filling stations (usually in cities). The signals are transferred to the SDAR control unit over coaxial cable.

The SDAR control unit decodes the signals and transfers them to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3) via the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST).

The COMAND operating, display and controller unit accomplishes the control functions for the SDAR control unit.

The SDAR control unit (3rd generation) has been used since modification year 07/1, and now it is also available for vehicles with code (460) Additional parts, Canadian vehicles. The SDAR control unit (3rd generation) differs from the previous generation on account of the following properties:
