The current fuel consumption is advised to the trip computer in the instrument cluster by the ME-SFI [ME] control unit in the form of square-wave pulse packages.
One square-wave pulse means 0.2 l/h.
The consumption signal is calculated from this by the instrument cluster (e.g 8.2 l/h) and displayed.
