Risk of accident and injury caused by diagnostic equipment in vehicle while traveling - AS58.40-Z-0001-01A
Always sit in rear seat when operating diagnostic equipment. For vehicles without rear seats, do not operate diagnostic equipment from the driver seat. If you have to operate diagnostic equipment from the front passenger seat, make sure front passenger airbag is deactivated.
Potential risks
Risk of injury
Operating diagnostic equipment from the driver or front passenger seat can result in serious injuries caused by the airbag inflating in the event of an accident. The airbag can catapult the relatively hard diagnostic equipment towards the vehicle occupants if a front-end accident occurs.
Risk of accident
Never operate diagnostic equipment from the driver seat as you could lose control of the vehicle and cause an accident as a result of the distraction.
Rules of conduct
- On vehicles with rear seats or a rear bench seat, the operation of the diagnostic equipment must be performed from one of the outer rear seats.
- On vehicles without rear seats, it is forbidden to operate diagnostic equipment without first deactivating the front passenger airbag.
- It is forbidden to operate diagnostic equipment from the driver seat due to the risk of accidents.
- The diagnosis multiplexer brought along must be placed behind the driver seat.
- The following diagnostic units are permissible for mobile use: "Star Diagnosis basic", "Star Diagnosis basic 2 ", "Star Diagnosis compact 3 " and "Star Diagnosis compact 3 w". Measurement technology equipment may not be used on the following diagnostic units while traveling in the vehicle: "Star Diagnosis compact3 " and "Star Diagnosis compact 3 w".
Deactivate front passenger airbag.
On vehicles with automatic child seat recognition (ACSR [AKSE]):
- Remove ACSR [AKSE] connector from front passenger seat.
Indicator lamps "AIRBAG OFF" and "SRS" light up or
- use "AIRBAG OFF seat cushion" (651 116 50 99) as seat padding on the front passenger seat.
The shutoff takes place automatically in this case and is signaled by the illumination of the "AIRBAG OFF" indicator lamp.
On vehicles without automatic child seat recognition (ACSR [AKSE]):
- Remove connector from front passenger airbag.
SRS indicator lamp in instrument cluster lights up.
Delete fault memory
Both the removal of the connector from the front passenger airbag and the removal of the ACSR [AKSE] connector from the front passenger seat are shown as a fault of the restraint system by the SRS lamp.
To ensure the fault-free function of the restraint system, the fault memory of the respective control units must be cleared after conclusion of the diagnostic test drive.
