Mobile telephone network, general 

The telephone system (portable CTEL) allows portable CTELs for the Personal Digital Cellular (PDC), Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) and Freedom Of Mobile Multimedia Access (FOMA (via Bluetooth)) network types to be operated in the vehicle. In order to do this, the user must connect a portable CTEL that is compatible with the relevant mobile telephone network to the preinstalled portable CTEL separation point (NTT-DoCoMo interface). The mobile radio signals are directly relayed to the portable CTEL separation point by the telephone and GPS roof antenna via an RF [HF] line. The portable CTEL separation point can be found in the center console telephone compartment beneath the armrest and directly connects the portable CTEL to the COMAND controller unit.

Components and principle of the telephone system (portable CTEL) 

The telephone system (portable CTEL) consists of the following control units and components:

The portable CTEL is operated using the buttons on the portable CTEL, the center console button group, the front central operating unit, the left multifunction steering wheel button group and the right multifunction steering wheel button group, and the voice control system (VCS [SBS]) that is integrated in the COMAND controller unit. Control signals are transmitted to the COMAND controller unit in the following ways:

The respective displays are transmitted by the COMAND controller unit to the COMAND display via LVDS video cable and to the instrument cluster via the central CAN.

Hands-free operation and voice operation 

Voice input (hands-free) takes place via the 2 microphones integrated in the hands-free system microphone group in the inside rearview mirror unit (A67). The signals are transmitted directly from the hands-free system microphone group to the COMAND controller unit. Voice output for model 221 and model 216 except code (810) Sound system takes place via the audio tuner control unit and for model 216 with code (810) Sound system via the amplifier for sound system over the speaker system. Audio signals are transmitted by the MOST, as is the mute signal for muting an active audio source during a telephone call.

Bluetooth 

For simple and fast integration of portable CTELs in the communication system, the COMAND controller unit supports the standardized network technology known as "Bluetooth". Bluetooth is a global open standard for making wireless equipment connections.
