MODEL 221 with CODE (529) HIGH Class Japan as of model year 09/YoM 08

Function requirements

IMPORTANT The different mobile phones can be connected to the COMAND controller unit via the adapter cable and the cell phone separation point.

IMPORTANT To ensure that a mobile phone with Bluetooth capability that is also authorized at the COMAND controller unit can be used in the vehicle, the mobile phone must support handsfree profile (HFP) 1.0 or 1.5. More information is available under:

IMPORTANT With a mobile phone operated with Bluetooth, temporary read access to the telephone book in the mobile phone is possible when the mobile phone supports the Bluetooth Profile Phonebook Access Profile (PBAP).

General

The mobile phone can be used by the user to initiate or terminate a telephone call to another person in the cellular telephone system network or the fixed-line network.

The establish call and terminate call function consists of the following subfunctions:

The system is described using the portable CTEL separation point and the mobile phone connected to the mobile phone adapter cable as an example. Deviations from this are indicated with the symbol. IMPORTANT

Operating instruction

A telephone call can be established or terminated using the:

Function sequence, establish call using mobile phone buttons

Dialing the telephone number using the buttons on the mobile phone or selecting the telephone number from the mobile phone's telephone book and pressing the "Accept call button" initiates the telephone call in hands-free mode.

The control signals of the mobile phone buttons are internally processed and forwarded via the following route to the COMAND controller unit:

IMPORTANT With a mobile phone operating with Bluetooth, the control signals from the buttons on the mobile phone are processed internally. They are not forwarded to the COMAND controller unit. The telephone call is completed in the "Private mode" when the mobile phone supports the "Private mode" and "Private mode" is activated.

Function sequence, establish call using telephone buttons or keypad on the center console button group

After dialing the telephone number using the center console button group and pressing the "Accept phone call" button, the phone call is established in handsfree mode. The telephone function is selected using the "Telephone" menu item, which takes place using the telephone/navigation quick select button (A40/9s5) on the front central operating unit (A40/9), and is then indicated on the COMAND display (A40/8).

The following ways of dialing a telephone number are available to the user here:

The name of the person who you wish to call can be selected in the address book and the call lists by scrolling up and down.

The control signals of the telephone buttons are relayed to the COMAND controller unit as follows:

The control signals of the keypad of the center console button group are routed to the COMAND controller unit as follows:

The COMAND controller unit generates the display and forwards it via a low voltage differential signal (LVDS) line to the COMAND display, where it is output.

Function sequence, establish call using multifunction steering wheel button groups

The address book of the COMAND controller unit or the mobile phone telephone book is selected by pressing the system selection button (S110s3) via the selection menu in the instrument cluster (A1). The name of the person to be called is selected by scrolling forward and back in the address book of the COMAND controller unit or the mobile phone telephone book using the scroll forward and back (S110s1) button. The accept/terminate phone call button (S111s3) can be used to establish the telephone call in the hands-free system.

The control signals of the multifunction steering wheel button groups are transferred to the COMAND controller unit via the following components:

The COMAND controller unit generates the display and forwards it via an LVDS line to the COMAND display, where it is output.

Function sequence, establish call using voice control system

The voice control of the VCS [SBS] is activated by pressing the VCS On button (S111s4) of the right multifunction steering wheel button group.

The control signals of the VCS [SBS] button are forwarded to the COMAND controller unit via the following components:

A signal tone is emitted after the voice control system has been activated. The signal tone is transmitted by the COMAND controller unit via the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) to the audio tuner control unit (N93/1).

From there, the signal tone is transmitted via direct lines to the following speakers with model 216:

The signal tone is transmitted via the following speakers with model 221:

Now different voice commands can be used to search and select a telephone number.

The voice commands are picked up by the handsfree system microphone group (A67b1) and relayed to the COMAND controller unit via a direct line.

The voice control of the voice control system (VCS) is used to establish the telephone call in the hands-free mode.

Function sequence, establish call using navigation mode

If a telephone number is stored when a point of interest (POI) is entered, the user can select this via the rotary pushbutton (A40/9s11) or via the voice control of the VCS [SBS]. The telephone call is then established in the hands-free mode. The control signals of the rotary pushbutton are routed to the COMAND controller unit via the telematics CAN.

The voice control signals are routed to the COMAND controller unit via the same route as described in "Function sequence, establish call via VCS [SBS]".

Function sequence, establish call for phone call in hands-free mode

After the telephone call has been established the COMAND controller unit transmits or receives the mobile phone signals or data via the following route:

Voice input in handsfree mode is picked up by the handsfree system microphone group and forwarded to the COMAND controller unit via a direct line.

With model 216 the voice output is routed by the audio tuner control unit via direct lines to the following speakers:

With model 221, the voice output is routed via direct lines to the following speakers:

IMPORTANT With a mobile phone operated with Bluetooth, the COMAND controller unit transmits or receives the mobile phone signals or data via the Bluetooth antenna (A2/91) and the mobile phone antenna, except when the telephone call is established using the mobile phone buttons. In the event of establishing a telephone call using the mobile phone buttons, the mobile phone transmits or receives the mobile phone signals or data directly via the mobile phone antenna. Voice input takes place using the microphone integrated in the mobile phone and voice output is emitted via the speakers integrated into the mobile phone ("private mode").

IMPORTANT In "Private Mode" the user makes a telephone call without other vehicle occupants being able to participate in the call. "Private Mode" can also be used via a Bluetooth headset or using a Bluetooth receiver in the rear.

Function sequence, terminate call using mobile phone buttons

Pressing the "QUIT" button on the mobile phone terminates the telephone call. The control signals of the mobile phone buttons are internally processed and forwarded via the following route to the COMAND controller unit:

IMPORTANT With a mobile phone operating with Bluetooth, the control signals from the buttons on the mobile phone are processed internally.

Function sequence, terminate call using telephone buttons or keypad on the center console button group

Pressing the "Terminate call" button on the center console button group or activating the "END" function in the "Telephone" menu item terminates the call. The control signals from the telephone buttons or the keypad in the center console button group are routed to the COMAND controller unit as follows:

Function sequence, terminate call using multifunction steering wheel button groups

The accept/terminate phone call button terminates the telephone call. The control signals of the multifunction steering wheel button groups are transferred to the COMAND controller unit via the following components:

Function sequence, call termination

Once the telephone call has been terminated, the COMAND controller unit interrupts transmission or reception of the mobile phone signals or data. This happens internally in the COMAND controller unit.

IMPORTANT With a mobile phone operated with Bluetooth, the COMAND controller unit discontinues transmission or reception of the mobile phone signals and data in an internal control unit procedure except when a call is terminated using the buttons on the mobile phone.

When a telephone call is terminated using the mobile phone buttons, the mobile phone interrupts the transmission or reception of mobile phone signals or data. This process runs internally in the mobile phone.
