Position finding and destination-oriented navigation, function - GF82.61-P-2010SXJ

Position determination 

With the active COMAND controller unit (A40/3), the navigation module integrated therein compares the global positioning system (GPS) data provided by the telephone and GPS roof antenna (A2/49) (model 221) or by the telephone and GPS antenna (A2/49) (model 216) with the data for vehicle position and orientation as well as with the map data. This determines the position of the vehicle. If the vehicle position is then requested, it is displayed on a map in the COMAND display (A40/8).

Special features here are the "Two Layer Logic" and the "Parking Logic". The "Two Layer Logic" enables position finding in the case of overlapping roads. Here, the layer is determined, on which the vehicle is located (important for overpasses).

The "Parking Logic" (multi-level car park detection) enables fast position finding when leaving multi-level car parks.

When entering a destination, the following options are available for route calculation:

The entry is supported by the system through predictive text input (speller). Depending on the progress of the entry, only those characters are made available that can be entered next. The corresponding information is provided by the navigation module.

POI 

Among others, the following POI categories are defined (availability depending on digitization status):

Memory for "Last destinations" and "Memory points" 

Administration of destination memories, address books, intermediate stops and memory points is performed by the COMAND controller unit. All the methods for entering a destination are available for making entries into this memory.

The "Last destinations" memory contains the last 50 destinations. The current vehicle position can be stored as a return point (memory point) in the "Memory points" memory.

Route criteria and options 

The following criteria are available for route calculation:

IMPORTANT The dynamic destination-oriented navigation can be used for each route option. In doing so, the VICS control unit (A2/37) calculates the route taking traffic information into consideration.

The route criteria can be restricted by entering up to 5 areas to be avoided (avoid areas). Here, the location and size of the areas to be avoided can be defined.

Journey on the calculated route 

The effective position is balanced cyclically with the calculated route in the navigation module integrated in the COMAND controller unit. Entry parameters are the GPS data as well as data from the turn rate sensor integrated into the COMAND controller unit and the data issued by the vehicle (RIZ signal and wheel direction of rotation). If the vehicle is moving on the pre-calculated route, then all the necessary information is communicated to the driver visually on the COMAND display and acoustically via the vehicle speakers. On reaching the destination, the function ends.

Leaving the calculated route 

If the vehicle is no longer moving on the pre-calculated route, then the route is recalculated.

Remaining driving time and remaining driving distance 

The current distance from the vehicle position to the main destination and the expected time of arrival are specified. Additionally the "Destination info." function can be used to display the distance to and the arrival time at the two intermediate destinations (Way Points) and to the intermediate stop.

The driving time is calculated from the speed, which is allocated to the stretches still to be traveled. When traveling stretches that are affected by traffic information, extra driving time is added to the calculation.

Manual block 

Stretches can be manually blocked. The distances, however, are specified by the system.

Intersection zoom 

Intersection areas can be shown as follows:

Lane recommendations (display in instrument cluster (A1)) are given in all types of representation. A pictogram may be displayed depending on the turning situation. A driving recommendation symbol is generated for each point where a decision has to be made.

A distinction is made between the following situations:

Intermediate destinations and intermediate stop 

Up to 2 intermediate destinations and one intermediate stop can be specified for a route to be calculated.

Distance to maneuver 

The respective distance to the turn-off point is displayed. After initiating the maneuver, the distance to the turn-off point is displayed by means of a bar graph. The length of the bar graph decreases as the vehicles approaches the turn-off point. If the turn-off point is passed, then the distance to the next turn-off point is displayed.

Map function 

Map display is always controlled by the COMAND controller unit. The following display functions are supported:

Vehicle Information and Communication System (VICS) 

The Vehicle Information and Communication System known as VICS enables important information concerning the current traffic situation to be received.

Dynamic destination-oriented navigation system 

The so-called VICS control unit is required for "dynamic destination-oriented navigation", which is installed as standard in the dashboard. The VICS control unit contains both the receiver and the antenna. These communicate with the VICS traffic beacons installed at the side of the road. Received signals are sent directly to the COMAND controller unit, where they are processed for dynamic destination-oriented navigation.
