MODIFICATION NOTES

18.2.05 Work quality note added Step 10  
DANGER Risk of injury caused by moving parts that can pinch, crush or  , in extreme cases even sever  extremities. Keep all body parts and limbs away from moving mechanical components. -
1 Switch off ignition, detach transmitter key from electronic ignition switch control unit    
2 Open both doors    
3 Open stowage compartment (1)    
4 Break out cover (2) from rear wall (3) of stowage compartment (1) with suitable screwdriver    
5 Open emergency opening valve (4) approx. 2 turns    
6 Insert emergency key into trunk lid lock (7)    
7 Pull trunk lid upward on handle (5) with both hands until tubular frame (6) is released NOTES When pulling up, it is necessary to overcome a perceptible resistance.  
8 Put up trunk lid completely toward rear together with tubular frame (6) NOTES To avoid damage to the tubular frame (6) ensure that the trunk lid pulled toward the rear and simultaneously upward on the handle (5) during the motion sequence.

9 Release trunk lid (7) with emergency key, put up trunk lid and move to assembly position as illustrated IMPORTANT It is necessary to hold the trunk lid until it is in the assembly position. Otherwise, the trunk lid will fall closed.  
10 Manually place the rear shelf (8) in the final vertical position NOTES If the Vario roof moves to an intermediate position of the rear shelf (8), the Vario roof can be damaged.

11 Lift lowered Vario roof out of the luggage compartment with a helper at both C-pillars (9) and fold forwards until the position of the C-pillars (9) is at 90° NOTES Move Vario roof only at C-pillars (9). If the Vario roof is moved at the Vario roof section (10), the Vario roof can be damaged.
IMPORTANT Avoid collision between rear window and rear shelf (8).
It is necessary for a helper to hold the Vario roof in the intermediate position.
 
12 Unclip cover (11) in headliner (12) and release front catch on locking bolt (13) completely by turning clockwise    
13 With helper, fold Vario roof toward front until catch hooks (14) engage in mounts (15) NOTES Move Vario roof only at C-pillars (9). If the Vario roof is moved at the Vario roof section (10), the Vario roof can be damaged.  
14 Lock front catch on locking bolt (13) by turning counterclockwise IMPORTANT The lock should engage audibly.  
15 Clip cover (11) into headliner (12)    
16 Push Vario roof down at transition between C-pillars (9) and Vario roof front section (10) (arrow B) IMPORTANT On left and right side of vehicle This completely arrests the C-pillar locks.  
17 Fold rear shelf (8) down by hand with side flaps (16) folded in    
18 Open trunk partition (24)    
19.1 Completely close both rear side windows with STAR DIAGNOSIS When rear side windows can be actuated with STAR DIAGNOSIS.  
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS Connect STAR DIAGNOSIS and read out fault memory   AD00.00-P-2000-04A

19.2 Open rear side widows with emergency operation feature If the rear side windows cannot be actuated with STAR DIAGNOSIS, e.g. due to a defect in the power soft top control unit. AR67.39-P-4190V
20 Fold tubular frame (6) toward front and insert left and right guide bolt (17) with helper NOTES Ensure that the motion sequence of the left and right is uniform. Otherwise, the tubular frame (6) can be damaged.

21 Lift retainer (20) with suitable screwdriver and simultaneously unclip hydraulic cylinder for trunk lid actuation (21) from tubular frame (6) with suitable screwdriver NOTES Do not remove retainer (20), otherwise, the tension on the retainer (20) would be lost. Carefully unclip hydraulic cylinder for trunk lid actuation (21). Otherwise, the piston rods (22) can be damaged.
IMPORTANT Access for lifting retainer (20) through brush frame (18) in trunk paneling (19).
Access for unclipping hydraulic cylinder for trunk lid actuation (21) through service flap (23) in trunk lining (19).
Unclip left and right hydraulic cylinder for trunk lid actuation (21) from tubular frame.
 
22 Position the hydraulic cylinders for trunk lid actuation (21) in the wheelhouses in such a way that they cannot damage surrounding components    
23 Close trunk partition (24)    
24 Close trunk lid and lock trunk lid (7)    
25 Simultaneously press trunk lid towards front and rear in lower area of license plate recess until the tubular frame (6) arrests IMPORTANT When pressing down, it is necessary to overcome a perceptible resistance.  
26 Close emergency opening valve (4) TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA77.37-P-1001-01A 
27 Plug opening for emergency opening valve (4) in rear wall of stowage compartment (1) with blind plug    
28 Close stowage compartment (1)    
29 Pull fuse 38 out of the interior fuse box (F34) IMPORTANT This prevents the emergency-closed Vario roof from being unintentionally actuated.  
REFER TO BASIC KNOWLEDGE Fuse assignment of fuse box in interior compartment on driver's side   GF54.15-P-1256-04SK
30 Close both doors
