Audio/COMAND Operating Instructions - GF82.85-P-0014-11CEJ

General 

This description attempts to present operation of the desire scope of functions for the COMAND controller unit (A40/3) in brief form while taking all the vehicle's standard and special equipment, as known at the copy deadline, into account. National-specific and equipment-specific deviations hereto are possible.

The Cockpit Management and Data System (COMAND) is operated via:

• Buttons on COMAND controller unit
• Audio/COMAND control panel (A40/9)
• Left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) or right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111)
• Handsfree system microphone (A67b1) for voice control system (VCS)

Description of control is subdivided into the following functions:

• Navigation 
• Audio 
• Video and TV 
• System settings 
• Mobile phone system up to 31.5.10 
• Mobile phone system as of 1.6.10 
• Additional information on setting transmission and reception volume 
• Additional Bluetooth information 

Navigation 

The map and language data are preinstalled on the hard disk of the COMAND controller unit. The card data can be updated by the customer or workshop by installing the data from an update DVD. Installation is also possible while driving. After inserting the update DVD into the COMAND controller unit, a prompt automatically appears asking whether the data is to be installed. After confirmation, installation is accomplished. If installation fails (e.g. due to dead vehicle battery (G1) or damaged DVD), operation can be continued with the old data. After installation, the DVD can be removed.

the navigation function can be activated with the "NAVI" button on the COMAND control unit or with the audio/COMAND control panel in the menu item Navi in the application bar on the audio/COMAND display (A40/8). The default screen appears.

The navigation base function consists of the following subfunctions:

Selection and settings can be made with the buttons on the COMAND control unit, on the audio/COMAND control panel or by voice control in the VCS

Selection or settings via application bar 

The navigation menu allows the following operating functions, some of which include additional subfunctions.

• Destination entry (e.g. with map, 50 characters (Japanese keyboard), points of interest, telephone numbers, ZIP codes, address book, previous destinations, memory points)
• Memory Points
• Points of interest (e.g. current position, along route, at destination)
• Vehicle Information and Communication System (VICS) information (e.g. test, graph, interrupt, set)
• Settings (e.g. navigation, VICS, Edit Position, avoid options)
• Home (e.g. guidance, enter, delete)
• Graph
• Discontinue or continue route guidance

Selection or settings via function bar 

The following control functions can be activated with the function bar, some of these include additional subfunctions:

• Display (e.g. view (2D, 3D, buildings), map (HWY Facility, Metro Highway Map, Guidance Display, VICS Public, VICS Highway), alignment, 3D Map Rotation, show points of interest, list points of interest)
• Route (e.g. detour (0.5 to 10 km), recalculate, different route (recommended, toll road, public roads, short route, other), route summary (duration, distance, etc.), route information (map view, route browser, etc., learn route)
• Route guidance (points of interest not available)
• Save (memory point, address book)
• Destination (destination entry, stopover, delete, etc.)
• Repeat (voice output of last message)

Audio 

The audio function can be displayed on the audio/COMAND control panel in the menu item Audio on the application bar on the audio/COMAND display The last audio application executed is started. If a different audio application is to be started, the application bar must be activated and the Audio menu item selected. As an alternative to this it is also possible to press the "FM/AM" or the "DISC" button the COMAND control unit.

The COMAND controller unit also switches to the new audio source if external audio equipment is connected via the Media Interface system (with code (518)) to the COMAND controller unit which is switched on.

The following audio sources can be selected with the menu item Audio in the application bar on the audio/COMAND display:

• FM 
• AM 
• Disk 
• Memory Card 
• Music register 
• Rear, with code (864) Fond entertainment system 
• AUX

Selection and settings can be made with the buttons on the COMAND control unit, on the audio/COMAND control panel or by voice control in the VCS Selection or adjustments can also be accomplished for FM, AM, AUX and tone using the button groups on the multifunction steering wheel.

FM 

The menu item FM can be activated in the menu item in the application bar on the audio/COMAND display on the audio/COMAND control panel or by pressing the "FM/AM" button on the COMAND control unit a number of times. The default screen appears. The play area displays the following:

• The currently set frequency, currently set station with the station name from the Global Positioning System (GPS) list (location-specific) and the numbers of their memory locations (if stored)
• A frequency bar in the frequency range or band for selecting stations.

If a station name is not stored in the GPS list, only the frequency appears.

Selection or settings via function bar: 

• FM 1 or FM 2 (display alternates between FM 1 and FM 2 depending on current selection)
  • FM 1
  • FM 2
  • Frequency entry
• Presets
  • Auto memory (memory locations 1 to 9 and 0)
• Tone

AM 

The menu item AM can be activated in the menu item in the application bar on the audio/COMAND display on the audio/COMAND control panel or by pressing the "FM/AM" button on the COMAND control unit a number of times. The default screen appears. The play area displays the following:

• Frequency momentarily set, current stations with station names from GPS list (depending on location) and their memory location number (if stored).
• A frequency bar in the frequency range or band for selecting stations.

If a station name is not stored in the GPS list, only the frequency appears.

Selection or settings via function bar: 

• AM 1 or AM 2 (display alternates between AM1 or AM2 depending on selection)
  • AM 1
  • AM 2
  • Frequency entry
• TI/back to AM (display alternates between TI (at frequency of 1620 kHz) and back to AM) depending on selection
• Presets
  • Auto memory (memory locations 1 to 9 and 0)
• Tone

Disk 

The menu item Disc can be activated in the menu item in the application bar on the audio/COMAND display on the audio/COMAND control panel or by pressing the "FM/AM" pressure button on the COMAND control unit. The default screen appears. The play area displays the following:

• Artist (if present on CD or DVD)
• Current track with elapsed play time
• Number of tracks on CD or DVD
• Medium (CD or DVD)

If no CD or DVD is inserted, the message "No Disk" is shown.

The following selections and settings are possible:

D Selection or settings via function bar (audio-CD or DVD) 

D Selection or settings with function bar (MP3-CD or DVD) 

D Title selection using skip function 

D Fast forward/rewind 

Selection or settings via function bar (audio CD or DVD)

• Medium (track on current CD or DVD, Memory Card or music index)

Track saved to hard disc from CD or DVD stored as MP3 files in music index

Selection or settings with function bar (MP3-CD or DVD) 

• MP3 (Normal track sequence, playback in random sequence, playback from random folder; with code (864) Fond Entertainment system: active source to rear, rear off)
• Folder (track list or folder list on CD or DVD)
• Medium (track on current CD or DVD, Memory Card or music index)
• Tone

Title selection using skip function 

The previous track can be played by pressing the button "Set station with station search, fast rewind, select previous track" on the COMAND control unit.

The next track can be played by pressing the button "Set station with station search, fast forward, select next track" on the COMAND control unit.

Fast forward/rewind 

The playback position can be changed to the right by pressing and holding the button "Set station with station search, fast rewind, select previous track" on the COMAND control unit. The playback position can be changed to the left by pressing and holding the button "Set station with station search, fast forward, select previous track" on the COMAND control unit.

Memory Card 

The menu item Memory card can be activated with the menu item audio in the application bar on the audio/COMAND display over the audio/COMAND control panel. The default screen appears. The play area displays the following:

• Current track with elapsed play time
• Number of tracks on memory card
• Artist, track or group, when saved

Selection or settings using the function bar 

• MP3 (Normal track sequence, playback in random sequence, playback from random folder; with code (864) Fond Entertainment system: active source to rear, rear off)
• Folder (track list or folder list on CD or DVD)
• Medium (current track, disc or music index)
• Tone

Music register 

The menu item MUSIC REGISTER can be activated with the menu item audio in the application bar on the audio/COMAND display over the audio/COMAND control panel. The default screen appears. The play area displays the following:

• Current track with elapsed play time
• Number of tracks in directory of hard disk
• Artist

Selection or settings via function bar: 

• Music register (normal track sequence, playback of random album, playback of tracks in random sequence, delete all audio files, information on memory capacity (max. 6 GB), folder (folder or track list); with code (864) Fond Entertainment system: Active source to rear, rear off)
• Medium (current track, disc or memory card)
• Tone

Fond, with code (864) Fond Entertainment system 

The menu item Rear passenger compartment is activated using the audio menu item in the application bar on the audio/COMAND display via the audio/COMAND control panel. The default screen appears. 2 infrared (IR) headphones are shown in the play field.

Selection or settings via function bar: 

• Rear
• Tone

AUX 

The menu item AUX is activated using the menu item Audio in the application bar on the audio/COMAND display via the audio/COMAND control panel. The default screen appears. Only 2 speaker symbols are shown in the play field.

Selection or settings via function bar: 

• AUX
  • Active source for rear with code (864) Rear entertainment system)
  • Rear off, with code (864) Fond Entertainment system
• Sound

Sound Settings 

The audio signals (sound settings) are made using the Sound menu item in each basic function. The default screen appears. The following settings are possible:

• Treble (treble settings, -10 to +10)
• Bass (bass settings, -10 to +10)
• Bal/Fad (balance and fade settings, -10 to +10)

Video and TV 

The video and TV function can be displayed on the audio/COMAND control panel in the menu item Audio on the application bar on the audio/COMAND display The last video or TV application executed is started.

To start a different video or TV application, it is necessary to go back to the application bar and select the menu item Video.

The following video sources can be selected via the Video menu item:

• TV
• Video DVD

Both the video sources TV and DVD video can be activated with the audio/COMAND control panel. The TV or DVD video image appears on the play field on the audio/COMAND display.

Selection or settings using the function bar 

• DVD-V, TV 1 or TV 2 (display changes depending on selection)

  (e.g. brightness, contrast, color, saturation, 16:9 optimized, 4:3, wide screen, Main, Sub; with code (864) Fond Entertainment system: active source to rear, rear off; DVD only: DVD functions, enter only TV: TV 1, TV 2, TV-station)

• Presettings (auto memory (1 to 9 and 0))
• Tone (treble, bass, balance and fader)

System settings 

The system setting function can be activated using the "SYS" button on the COMAND control unit or via the menu item System in the application bar on the audio/COMAND display via the audio/COMAND control panel The default screen appears.

the settings can be made with the keys on the COMAND control unit on the audio/COMAND control panel or by voice control with the VCS.

The following settings are possible:

• Display (brightness, day design, night design, automatic)
• Time (set time, display format)
• Reading speed (fast, medium, slow)
• Voice control (help window, echo function)
• Reversing camera (switch-on when transmission is shifted into reverse, voice outputs)
• Bluetooth (Bluetooth device list, activate Bluetooth)
• Reset
• Selection of the system language

Mobile phone system up to 31.5.10 

The operating description is divided into the following chapters:

• Establish telephone connection - make a call (up to 31.5.10) 
• Establish telephone connection - receive a call (up to 31.5.10) 
• Handsfree mode (up to 31.5.10) 
• "Private mode" (up to 31.5.10) 
• "Seamless Switch" (up to 31.5.10) 
• Ending, aborting, or rejecting a call (up to 31.5.10) 
• Control of call waiting (up to 31.5.10) 

The system is described using a mobile phone connected to the Japan electrical connector adapter (X39/46) cable as an example. Deviations from this are indicated with the symbol.

With a mobile phone operated with Bluetooth, read access to the telephone book in the mobile phone is possible when the mobile phone supports the Bluetooth Profile Phonebook Access Profile (PBAP).

A Bluetooth-compatible mobile phone can only be operated in the vehicle if a mobile phone is not connected to the Japan electrical connector adapter cable. Additionally, the Bluetooth-capable mobile phone must be authorized at the COMAND controller unit and support Hands Free Profile (HFP) 1.0 or 1.5. Additional information is available at:

Establish telephone connection - make a call (up to 31.5.10) 

The following different ways of making a telephone call are available to the user: The telephone number can be selected from various call lists (received ro dialed) and called automatically, however can also be entered manually on the telephone keypad on the COMAND controller unit or with the keys on the mobile phone. The "Establishing a telephone connection - making a call" subfunction consists of the following additional subfunctions:

D Dialing using buttons on the mobile phone 

D Dialing via the left multifunction steering wheel button group and the right multifunction steering wheel button group 

D Dialing over voice control with the voice control system (VCS) 

D Dialing using the Human-Machine Interface (HMI) 

Dialing using buttons on the mobile phone 

If dialing is accomplished with the buttons on the mobile phone, the telephone call is established in hands-free mode.

With a mobile phone operated with Bluetooth, the phone call is completed in "Private mode" if the mobile phone supports "Private mode" and "Private mode" is activated.

Dialing via the left multifunction steering wheel button group and the right multifunction steering wheel button group 

The address book of the COMAND controller unit or the phone book of the mobile phone is selected by pressing the System selection button (S110s3) via the selection menu in the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster (A1). The name of the person to be called is selected by scrolling forward and back in the address book of the COMAND controller unit or the phone book of the mobile phone using the scroll forward and back button (S110s1). The accept/terminate phone call button (S111s3) can be used to establish the telephone call in hands-free mode.

Dialing with voice control in the voice control system (VCS) 

Pressing the voice control system ON button (S111s4) of the right multifunction steering wheel button group activates the voice control of the voice control system. An acoustic signal is emitted after activation has taken place.

Dialing using the Human-Machine Interface (HMI) 

The basic telephone (ComTel) function is activated using the TEL hardkey on the COMAND controller unit or the ComTel menu item in the application bar on the Audio/COMAND display using the Audio/COMAND control panel and then shown on the Audio/COMAND display.

The following ways of dialing a telephone number are available to the user here:

• Enter telephone number with keypad on the COMAND control unit directly or with audio/COMAND control panel and character bar on audio/COMAND display.
• Search for the telephone number using the "Address Book" menu entry in the address book
• Search for telephone number using the "Call Lists" (received or dialed) menu entry in the call lists

The name of the person who you wish to call can be selected in the address book and the call lists by scrolling up and down. The call is activated with the "SEND" function or by pressing the "Accept phone call" button.

Establish telephone connection - receive a call (up to 31.5.10) 

The mobile phone receives a call signal via the multifunction antenna (A28/11). The calling party is indicated on the mobile phone display and at the same time this information is transferred to the COMAND controller unit via the communications control unit (N123/6).

The caller identification is shown by the COMAND controller unit via the Audio/COMAND display.

Additionally, the caller identification is shown on the display of the mobile phone and on the multifunction display of the instrument cluster.

Handsfree mode (up to 31.5.10) 

Accepting a call by:

• Pressing the accept/terminate phone call button
• Pressing the "Accept phone call" button on the mobile phone
• Pressing "Accept phone call" an COMAND control unit
• Selecting the corresponding "Accept" option using the Audio/COMAND control panel

The hands-free system is active as a standard feature when a telephone connection is established. The voice input takes place via the hands-free system microphone, which is read in directly by the COMAND controller unit. Voice output is sent to the speakers installed in the vehicle.

"Private mode" (up to 31.5.10) 

When in "Private mode", the user can make a telephone call without other vehicle occupants being able to hear the conversation. To make a call in "Private Mode", one of the following processes must be completed:

• Disconnection of mobile phone from Japan electrical connector adapter cable during a telephone call in hands-free mode
• Call acceptance in hands-free mode and subsequent activation of "Private Mode" menu item via the Audio/COMAND control panel and the Audio/COMAND display when the mobile phone is disconnected from the Japan electrical connector adapter cable and operated via Bluetooth
• Establishing a call using buttons on mobile phone when mobile phone is disconnected from Japan electrical connector adapter cable and operated via Bluetooth

With a mobile phone operated with Bluetooth, the phone call is completed in "Private mode" if the mobile phone supports "Private mode" and "Private mode" is activated.

"Seamless Switch" (up to 31.5.10) 

"Seamless switch" means either than an existing call to the mobile phone is held when the phone is separated from the Japan electrical connector adapter cable or that an existing call is routed to the COMAND controller unit when the mobile phone is connected to the Japan electrical connector adapter cable.

Ending, aborting, or rejecting a call (up to 31.5.10) 

The user can terminate the telephone call or reject an incoming call at any time. The user has the following options for terminating or rejecting the connection:

• Press "END" button on COMAND control unit:
  • Press "END" button once to hold call
  • Pressing the "END" button twice to reject the call
• Pressing the accept/terminate phone call button
• Select "END" option in "Reject" base function ComTel via the Audio/COMAND control panel
• Press the "QUIT" button on the mobile phone

The COMAND control unit then separates the connection.

Control of call waiting (up to 31.5.10) 

If another call is incoming during a telephone call, this is shown via the Audio/COMAND display. The telephone call can then be accepted or rejected.

If the incoming call is accepted, it becomes active and the existing call is terminated. If the incoming telephone is rejected, only the current telephone call is maintained.

The incoming telephone call can be accepted or rejected with the telephone buttons on the COMAND control unit, the audio/COMAND control panel or the telephone call acceptance and termination button the button group on the right side of the multifunction steering wheel.

Mobile phone system as of 1.6.10 

The operating description is divided into the following chapters:

• Establish telephone connection - make a call (as of 1.6.10) 
• Establish telephone connection - receive a call (as of 1.6.10) 
• Handsfree mode (as of 1.6.10) 
• "Private mode" (as of 1.6.10) 
• "Seamless Switch" (as of 1.6.10)

Additionally, the Bluetooth-capable mobile phone must be authorized at the COMAND controller unit and support Hands Free Profile (HFP) 1.0 or 1.5.

With a mobile phone operated with Bluetooth, read access to the telephone book in the mobile phone is possible when the mobile phone supports the Bluetooth Profile Phonebook Access Profile (PBAP).

When dialing using the buttons on the mobile phone, the telephone call is completed in "Private Mode" if the mobile phone supports "Private Mode" and "Private Mode" has been activated.

Dialing via the left multifunction steering wheel button group and the right multifunction steering wheel button group 

The address book of the COMAND controller unit or the phone book of the mobile phone is selected by pressing the System selection button via the selection menu in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster. The name of the person to be called is selected by scrolling forward and back in the address book of the COMAND controller unit or the phone book of the mobile phone using the scroll forward and back button.

The accept/terminate phone call button can be used to establish the telephone call in hands-free mode.

With a mobile phone operated with Bluetooth, read access to the telephone book in the mobile phone is possible when the mobile phone supports the Bluetooth Profile Phonebook Access Profile (PBAP).

Dialing with voice control in the voice control system (VCS) 

Pressing the voice control system ON button of the right multifunction steering wheel button group activates the voice control of the VCS [SBS]. An acoustic signal is emitted after activation has taken place.

Dialing using MMS 

The basic telephone (ComTel) function is activated using the TEL hardkey on the COMAND controller unit or the ComTel menu item in the application bar on the Audio/COMAND display using the Audio/COMAND control panel and then shown on the Audio/COMAND display.

The following ways of dialing a telephone number are available to the user here:

• Enter telephone number with keypad on the COMAND control unit directly or with audio/COMAND control panel and character bar on audio/COMAND display.
• Search for the telephone number using the "Address Book" menu entry in the address book
• Search for telephone number using the "Call Lists" (received or dialed) menu entry in the call lists

The name of the person who you wish to call can be selected in the address book and the call lists by scrolling up and down. The call is activated with the "SEND" function or by pressing the "Accept phone call" button.

Establish telephone connection - receive a call (as of 1.6.10) 

The incoming call is shown on the display of the mobile phone, via the body electronics Audio/COMAND display and on the multifunction display in the instrument cluster.

Handsfree mode (as of 1.6.10) 

Accepting a call by:

• Pressing the accept/terminate phone call button
• Press the "Accept phone call" button on the mobile phone
• Pressing "Accept phone call" an COMAND control unit
• Selecting the "Accept" option using the audio/COMAND control panel

The hands-free system is active as a standard feature when a telephone connection is established.

Voice input takes place via the hands-free system microphone. The hands-free system microphone is connected directly to the COMAND controller unit. Voice output is sent to the speakers installed in the vehicle.

"Private mode" (as of 1.6.10) 

When in "Private mode", the user can make a telephone call without other vehicle occupants being able to hear the conversation. When dialing using the buttons on the mobile phone, the telephone call is carried out in "Private Mode" if the mobile phone supports "Private Mode" and "Private Mode" has been activated.

After a telephone call has been accepted or established in hands-free mode, you can switch to "Private Mode" by activating "Private Mode" via the mobile phone if the mobile phone supports "Private Mode".

"Seamless Switch" (as of 1.6.10) 

"Seamless Switch" provides the following functionality:

• An existing telephone conversation can be continued in hands-free mode (e.g. when getting into the vehicle) if the COMAND controller unit is switched on and "Private mode" is not activated on the mobile phone.
• An existing telephone conversation can be continued on the mobile phone if the COMAND controller unit is switched off.

With some Japanese mobile phones you can select how the mobile phone behaves if a connection is interrupted. If the "Switch off if connection is interrupted" setting has been selected, "Seamless Switch" cannot be activated because a brief connection interruption occurs.

Ending, aborting or rejecting a call (as of 1.6.10) 

The user can terminate the telephone call or reject an incoming call at any time. The user has the following options for terminating or rejecting the connection:

• Press "END" button on COMAND control unit:
  • Press "END" button once to hold call
  • Pressing the "END" button twice to reject the call
• Pressing the accept/terminate phone call button
• Select "END" option in "Reject" base function ComTel via the Audio/COMAND control panel
• Press the "QUIT" button on the mobile phone

The COMAND control unit then separates the connection.

Control of call waiting (as of 1.6.10) 

If another call is incoming during a telephone call, this is shown via the Audio/COMAND display. The telephone call can then be accepted or rejected.

If the incoming call is accepted, it becomes active and the existing call is terminated. If the incoming telephone is rejected, only the current telephone call is maintained.

The incoming telephone call can be accepted or rejected with the telephone buttons on the COMAND control unit, the audio/COMAND control panel or the telephone call acceptance and termination button the button group on the right side of the multifunction steering wheel.

Additional information on setting transmission and reception volume 

The transmission and reception volume can be set within the range of 2 to +2 by selecting the following menu on the audio/COMAND display:

• Phone
• Volume Setting

Additional Bluetooth information 

For simple and fast integration of a mobile phone into the vehicle, the COMAND controller unit supports the Bluetooth standardized network technology. Bluetooth is a worldwide open standard for connecting Bluetooth devices (e.g. mobile phones) wirelessly and is based on radio technology in the 2.4 GHz range. One advantage of Bluetooth, next to the wide availability of Bluetooth devices, is the uncomplicated and spontaneous connection of Bluetooth devices to a Bluetooth network (ad-hoc network).

The extremely high data security (128-bit encoding) and the relatively limited radius (approx. 10 m) of such a Bluetooth network is what makes the use of Bluetooth in the vehicle interesting.

The COMAND controller unit can integrate the latest-generation mobile phones via the Bluetooth interface of the mobile phone and the Bluetooth antenna (A2/91) into the vehicle hierarchy.

Connecting Bluetooth devices 

You can access the list of Bluetooth devices by selecting the following menus on the Audio/COMAND display:

• Phone, Bluetooth Phone List, Update
• System Settings, Bluetooth, Bluetooth Device List (Activate Bluetooth)
