Acceleration sensor, component description - GF32.31-P-5106GZ

Location 

The left front body lateral acceleration sensor and right front body lateral acceleration sensor are each located in the shock-absorber dome.

The right rear body lateral acceleration sensor is located at the right rear on the load compartment floor to the wheelhouse.

Task 

The three acceleration sensors are used for measuring the vertical acceleration of the vehicle body. They detect the vertical body acceleration and supply signals to the AIRmatic control unit (N51).

Design 

The body acceleration sensors consist of an electronic oscillation module (operating principle same as spring/mass system).

Function 

Evaluation of the measured data from the acceleration sensors enables the vertical speed of the vehicle body to be determined. Additional input variables such as steering wheel angle and wheel speeds allow the vehicle speed, longitudinal acceleration and lateral acceleration to be determined. The AIRmatic control unit uses these measured variables to determine the optimum damper stage in each instance. Through evaluation of the stop light signal from the ESP control unit (N47-5) brake applications can be quickly detected and the vehicle's pitch motion reduced in good time by changing the damper setting.
