Location

The AIRmatic control unit on model 164 is located on the control unit retaining plate under the driver seat. The AIRmatic control unit on model 251 is located on the control unit retaining plate in the front passenger footwell.

The AIRmatic control unit has the following tasks:

Reading in of sensors, pickups and signals
Evaluation of input factors
Actuation of components

The input factors are read in with the following connections:

Left rear level sensor (B22/7)
Left front level sensor (B22/8)
Right front level sensor (B22/9)
Right rear level sensor (B22/10)
Left front body acceleration sensor with model (B24/3) (with model 164.1, 251 or model 164.8 with code (214) Adaptive damping system (ADS) with skyhook and level control)
Right front body acceleration sensor with model (B24/4) (with model 164.1, 251 or model 164.8 with code (214) Adaptive damping system (ADS) with skyhook and level control)
Right rear body acceleration sensor with model (B24/6) (with model 164.1, 251 or model 164.8 with code (214) Adaptive damping system (ADS) with skyhook and level control)

Engine compartment CAN

The AIRmatic control unit reads in the following information via the engine compartment CAN.

Motor speed, engine torque, atmospheric pressure and intake air temperature, from the CDI control unit (N3/9) (with diesel engine) or from the ME-SFI control unit (N3/10) (with gasoline engine)
Ambient air temperature, over the interior CAN from the AAC [KLA] control and operating unit (N22) (without code (581) Comfort automatic air conditioning) or from the comfort AAC control and operating unit (N22/7) (with code (581) Comfort automatic air conditioning) and forwarded by the central gateway control unit (N93) to the engine compartment CAN
Wheel speeds and wheel rotation directions, provided by the ESP control unit (N47-5)
Rotation angle, recorded by steering angle sensor (N49) and provided by steering column tube module (N80)
Status of level control switch (N72/1s2) (without code (430) Off-road package) or the level control HIGH switch (N72s32) (with model 164.1 with code (430) Off-road package, model 164.8) or the level control LOW switch (N72s33) (with model 164.1 with code (430) Off-road package, model 164.8) or with model 164.8 the level control selector wheel (N72s35) (with code (430) Off-road package), on the interior CAN as provided by the upper control panel control unit (N72/1) and forwarded by the central gateway control unit to the engine compartment CAN
Status of the Comfort/Sport (ADS) switch (N72/1s31) (with model 164.1, 251 or with model 164.8 with code (214) Adaptive damping system (ADS) with skyhook and level control), also sent by the upper control panel control unit to the interior CAN and forwarded by the central gateway control unit to the engine compartment CAN

Evaluation of input factors

The input factors are evaluated by the microprocessor and the corresponding components are actuated.

Air suspension compressor relay (F58kG) for actuating the AIRmatic compressor unit (A9/1) with integrated AIRmatic pressure reduction valve (A9/1y1)
AIRmatic valve unit (Y36) with following components:

Left front level control valve (Y36y1)
Right front level control valve (Y36y2)
Left rear level control valve (Y36y3)
Right rear level control valve (Y36y4)
AIRmatic central reservoir charge valve (Y36y5)

For vehicles with code (214) Adaptive damping system (ADS) with skyhook and level control, the damper regulation actuates the following components by means of a direct line:

Left front axle damping valve unit (Y51) with following components:
- Solenoid valve 1, left front (Y51y1)
- Solenoid valve 2, left front (Y51y2)
Right front axle damping valve unit (Y52) with following components:
- Solenoid valve 1, right front (Y52y1)
- Solenoid valve 2, right front (Y52y2)
Left rear axle damping valve unit (Y53) with following components:
- Solenoid valve 1, left rear (Y53y1)
- Solenoid valve 2, left rear (Y53y2)
Right rear axle damping valve unit (Y54) with following components:
- Solenoid valve 1, right rear (Y54y1)
- Solenoid valve 2, right rear (Y54y2)
