Function requirements for proximity warning system (AWS), general

Proximity warning system, general

The distance warning system is an additional function in DISTRONIC that is controlled by the ESP control unit (N47-5).

It warns the driver in the speed range of 30 to 260 km/h of moving or stationary obstacles in his lane

Proximity warning system, function sequence

Irrespective of the DISTRONIC distance control, the driver can activate or deactivate the distance warning separately using the left and right multifunction steering wheel button group (S110, S111) in the "Additional functions" menu in the instrument cluster's sub-menu "Proximity warning device"). Thus the distance warning system is dependent here on the function (function requirements) of the radar sensor system.

If the distance warning is activated the symbol for the distance warning lights up in the lower multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster.

In the instrument cluster's upper multifunction display, the driver's vehicle, the set target distance and the vehicle ahead, with its current distance, are all displayed.

The distance warning is initiated whenever a deceleration >6 m/s 2 for the driver's vehicle is necessary in order to avoid a collision. Distance warnings are indicated by the DTR warning lamp and an intermittent signal.

IMPORTANT

The distance warning system does not perform any control functions by itself, such as braking the vehicle.

With the DTR distance potentiometer (S40r1 or S40/4r1), the specified distance from the vehicle in front can be set in six steps between about 1.0 and 2.0 s, to match vehicle speed. At setting three this corresponds to a target distance of approx.

42 m at a speed of 100 km/h.

The specified distance is converted from seconds to meters (depending on the driver's own vehicle speed), and displayed in the form of a white line in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster.

The target distance in the distance indicator matches the current vehicle speed without the driver having to adjust the DTR distance potentiometer.

except code (494) USA version

As an additional function, the driver is alerted if he/she remains within a distance <0.9s from the preceding vehicle for longer than 3s. The DTR warning lamp remains lit until the correct distance has been reestablished.

This gives the driver the opportunity of avoiding a fine (for leaving insufficient distance to the vehicle in front).
