General function
On diesel engines the vacuum required for brake boost is produced by a vacuum pump (48). On gasoline engines the intake pipe vacuum is used for brake boost.
The vacuum pump (48) is attached to the timing case cover and is driven by the cams on the injection timer.
From the vacuum pump (48) the vacuum reaches the brake unit (5) via a line.
At the same time the vacuum is also stored in a vacuum accumulator (15, 15a).
The volume is increased due to the vacuum accumulator in the frame cross tube (15) or vacuum reservoir (15a) and several braking operations can be carried out one after the other, without the brake boost being reduced. A non-return valve (41) is installed in the vacuum line from the vacuum pump to the brake unit.
The task of the non-return valve (41) is to keep the vacuum in the brake unit (5) constant and to store it.
In the event of a defective vacuum pump (48) the non-return valve also prevents engine oil entering the brake unit (5).
The brake unit (5) has a vacuum connection and a connection to atmospheric pressure (outside air). The pressure difference between the two pressures is used to support the leg force at the brake pedal. In the event of a vacuum failure the system continues working as a normal hydraulic brake system, though with correspondingly increased leg force.
The brake master cylinder is flange-mounted directly on the brake unit (5).
The brake master cylinder is actuated by the brake unit (5) via a thrust rod.
