Washing windshield, general 

Washing the windshield clears the windshield of dirt and soiling.

The windshield wiping function comprises the following subfunctions:

• Washing function sequence 
• Afterwiping function sequence 

Washing function sequence 

The washing function is activated by pressing the combination switch (S4) in the axial direction beyond the detent point.

The position of the combination switch is read in by the steering column tube module (N80) and placed on the chassis CAN. The central gateway control unit (N93) routes the request of the combination switch via the interior CAN to the front fuse and relay module (N10/1).

The front SAM control unit then actuates the window washer fluid pump (M5/1).

During the wash cycle, wiping takes place at the wiper speed set using the combination switch. When the combination switch is in the rest position, wiping takes place at stage "3".

Windshield washing is interrupted after t = 15 s when a "stuck combination switch" is recognized.

Washing of the windshield is interrupted during an engine start.

Afterwiping function sequence 

Afterwiping becomes active as soon as the combination switch is no longer activated. The number of afterwipe cycles depends on the operation time of the combination switch.

• Actuation time t < 1 s:

  A single afterwipe occurs.

• Actuation time t > 1 s:

  Three afterwipes occur.

Afterwiping is carried out at the wiper speed set at the combination switch. When the combination switch is in the rest position, afterwiping takes place at stage "3".
