Cornering illumination 

Function requirements 

Function 

The cornering illumination function enables a better illumination of the traffic lane in the turn-off direction and it is realized by means of the cornering lights.

Here only cornering light is actuated: the inside corner one during forward travel and the outside corner one during reverse travel. It is always switched on and off with dimming.

The evaluation of all relevant information, the resulting actuation and any required treatment of faults is undertaken by the xenon headlamp control unit on the left front lamp unit (E1).

The xenon headlamp control units are networked to each other over the front end CAN, whereby the xenon headlamp control unit on the left front lamp unit acts as a master control unit.

The xenon headlamp control unit on the left front lamp unit actuates the left cornering illumination and the xenon headlamp control unit on the right front lamp unit (E2) actuates the right cornering illumination.

The turn-off direction is defined by the turn signaling function or the rotation angle, as recognized by the steering angle sensor, and sent by the steering column module over the chassis CAN to the central gateway control unit. The information is made available by the central gateway control unit to the xenon headlamp control unit on the left front lamp unit over the front end CAN.

The xenon headlamp control unit on the left front lamp unit receives the request and forwards it if necessary to the xenon headlamp control unit on the right front lamp unit.

If the request is suddenly canceled the cornering illumination function remains active for a minimum switch-on time of approx. 5 s.

Under a speed of 40 km/h the request from the turn signaling function has priority over the request recognized by the rotation angle.

Dynamic curve illumination

Function 

The dynamic curve illumination ensures an optimum illumination during cornering. To this end the headlamp unit and thus the low beams are swiveled into the horizontal towards the center of the corner. When steering into a corner the inside corner headlamp unit swivels-in up to 15°, the outside corner up to 7.5°.

Dynamic curve illumination actuation depends on the following set variables:

The steering angle is the direct input parameter.

The vehicle speed influences the system's control response (ratio of steering angle to swivel angle).

Low vehicle speeds require a smaller transformation ratio to prevent the pattern of light from appearing jumpy, e.g. in urban traffic.

At medium speeds an immediate response is given to relatively minor changes in the steering angle and at higher speeds the system responses are dampened again to a greater extent.

A range with lower sensitivity and greater damping is provided (approx. 6° steering angle) to compensate for the natural weaving of the vehicle when traveling straight ahead.

The steering angle recorded over the steering angle sensor is sent by the steering column module to the chassis CAN.

Information on vehicle speed and yawing rate is also sent by the ESP control unit to the chassis CAN.

The information is made available by the central gateway control unit to the xenon headlamp control unit at the left front lamp unit over the front end CAN.

The xenon headlamp control unit on the left front lamp unit receives the data, evaluates it and sends the corresponding information to the xenon headlamp control unit on the right front lamp unit.

The xenon headlamp control units are networked to each other over the front end CAN, whereby the xenon headlamp control unit on the left front lamp unit acts as a master control unit. The left dynamic curve illumination motor is actuated by the xenon headlamp control unit on the left front lamp unit, the right dynamic curve illumination motor by the xenon headlamp control unit on the right front lamp unit.

Backup function in the case of a fault 

To avoid any dazzling of oncoming traffic in the event of defective curve illumination, the headlamp units are swiveled, where possible, to the center position.

If a dynamic curve illumination motor malfunctions the headlamp unit is completely lowered by actuation of the headlamp range adjustment motor.

Motorway light 

With code (622) Intelligent Light System (right-hand traffic) 

Function requirements 

Function 

The motorway lights are used for better illumination of the traffic lane at high vehicle speeds.

As of a vehicle speed in excess of 110 km/h the optical power of the bi-xenon lights is increased to 37 W by the corresponding xenon headlamp control unit.

On vehicles without code (610) Night View Assist, the high beam lights are additionally switched on. In order to ensure that oncoming traffic is not dazzled, the high beam light cone is partially covered up by folding covers, actuated by the high beam solenoids.

Apart from this the headlamp unit for the left front lamp unit is raised to its maximum level by the headlamp range adjustment motor. This measure serves to increase the range of the light cone.

Wide-beam fog light 

With code (622) Intelligent Light System (right-hand traffic)

If the rear fog light actuation is active and at a vehicle speed of less than 70 km/h the xenon headlamp control unit on the left front lamp unit actuates the left headlamp range adjustment motor and the left dynamic curve illumination motor. The headlamp unit is swiveled outwards through 8° and then lowered.

This in turn serves to reduce internal dazzling and the side illumination of the travel lane is improved.

Deactivation 

IMPORTANT If the "extended fog light function" is active the "dynamic curve illumination" function is switched off.
