Symbol and ambiance illumination, function - GF82.20-P-2100LE

MODEL 216.3, 221.0/1 as of model year 2009/YoM 08

Symbol and ambiance illumination in general

The symbol and ambiance illumination feature provides the brightness-adjustable illumination of all controls as well as the illumination of the vehicle interior.

The symbol and ambiance illumination feature consists of the following subfunctions:

Additional function requirements, search and symbol illumination

IMPORTANT In the absence of the signal from circuit 58d and circuit status circuit 15R On, the corresponding components are actuated with a substitute brightness value corresponding to 50%.

Function sequence, search and symbol illumination

To control the search and symbol illumination, the following information is read in and evaluated by the upper control panel control unit (N72/1) via the interior CAN (CAN B):

IMPORTANT If the function "Locator lighting" has been activated via the COMAND control unit (A40/3), it automatically switches itself on when the vehicle is unlocked using the transmitter key (A8/1).

This causes "Standing lights actuation active" status to be set, which also activates the search and symbol illumination. If the driver door is then opened, the "locator lighting" function goes off. The "Standing lights actuation active" status is canceled, and the instrument cluster (A1) deactivates the search and symbol illumination. The controls in the vehicle are not illuminated again until the transmitter key in the EIS [EZS] control unit (N73) is moved to the radio position (circuit 15R On).

When the "Auto On/Off headlamp" function is coded in position "0" with the rotary light switch (S1), the search and symbol illumination is actuated only when "Twilight recognized" according to the status of the rain/light sensor (B38/2) when circuit 15R is On.

The upper control panel control unit uses the incoming information to generate the circuit 58d signal and sends it via the interior CAN to the following control units:

The upper control panel control unit controls the search and symbol illumination of the integrated controls and the following components. Actuation via the instrument panel LIN:

Direct actuation:

The front SAM control unit actuates the following components:

The rear control unit (model 216) actuates the symbol illumination for the following components directly:

The overhead control panel control unit actuates the following components:

IMPORTANT On model 216 the ambient lamp in the inside rearview mirror unit is dependent on the status of circuit 15 and its brightness cannot be adjusted.

The brightness of the search and symbol illumination for the operating units is dependent on the status of circuit 15. At circuit 15 OFF the brightness value is set to the day value and at circuit 15 ON it is set specific to the status of circuit 58d.

The central gateway control unit reads the signal of circuit 58d via the interior CAN and relays it to the chassis CAN (CAN E) and central CAN (CAN F).

The steering column tube module (N80) reads in the circuit 58d signal via the chassis CAN.

The following control units read in the circuit 58d signal via the central CAN:

The steering column module actuates the symbol illumination for the following components:

The COMAND control unit routes the circuit 58d signal to the following control units for actuation of the symbol illumination of the integrated controls on the telematics CAN (CAN A):

The left door control unit (model 216) or the left front door control unit (model 221) actuates the symbol illumination for the following components via the front door LIN: (LIN B1):

The right door control unit (model 216) or the right front door control unit (model 221) actuates the symbol illumination for the following components via the front door LIN:

The left rear door control unit (model 221) actuates the symbol illumination for the following components.

Actuation via rear door LIN (LIN B2):

Direct actuation:

The right rear door control unit (model 221) actuates the following components.

Actuation via the rear door LIN:

Direct actuation:

The symbol illumination of the controls located on the overhead control panel control unit is switched on when a vehicle door is opened even without reception of a circuit 58d signal with a brightness value, equivalent to 100%. If the status of the vehicle doors no longer changes, the symbol illumination is switched off after t = 30 s.

The opening or closing of a vehicle door while this time interval is running down causes it to start again. The symbol illumination is switched off immediately when the vehicle is locked. Actuation of the symbol illumination in accordance with the status of the rain/light sensor only takes place with circuit 15R On. For circuit 15 OFF the symbol illumination is actuated corresponding to the daytime brightness level.

Additional function requirements for ambient lighting (with code (876) Interior lights package)

Function sequence for ambient lighting (with code (876) Interior lights package)

The ambiance illumination encompasses the actuation of different components for illumination of the footwells, instrument panel and vehicle doors.

The degree of illumination can be adjusted using the front central operating unit.

As of 1.6.09, three colors are also selectable for the ambience illumination. The color can be selected on the front central operating unit.

Selection of a color is not possible for the footwell illumination.

The following signals are read in and evaluated by the overhead control panel control unit for controlling the ambiance illumination:

The set brightness value and also, as of 1.6.09, color selection is stored on the central CAN by the COMAND control unit. The central gateway control unit (N93) provides the values to the overhead control panel control unit on the interior CAN.

The overhead control panel control unit transmits the request to switch on the ambient lighting to the following control units via the interior CAN:

The upper control panel control unit actuates the following components:

IMPORTANT The ambiance illumination LEDs are mounted onto the instrument panel's trim strip.

On model 221 the left front seat control unit actuates the left rear footwell lamp (E17/18) and the right front seat control unit actuates the right rear footwell lamp (E17/17).

The left door control unit (model 216) or left front door control unit (model 221) actuates the following components:

The right door control unit (model 216) or right front door control unit (model 221.) actuates the following components:

The left rear door control unit (model 221) actuates the following components.

The rear door control unit (model 221) actuates the following components.
