REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
DANGER Risk of injury  caused by performing testing or repair work on airbag or emergency tensioning retractor units. Store airbag units with deployment side facing up; do not expose to temperatures greater than 100 °C. When working on these units, disconnect the power supply. AS91.00-Z-0001-01A
NOTES Notes on performing repair, body work and welding on vehicles with airbags and ETR units   AH91.00-P-0002-01M

1 Remove rear seat backrest Model 216.3 AR91.12-P-1620SC 
    Model 221.0/1 with code (223) Rear bench seat with electrically adjustable outer seats with PRE-SAFE positioning function for outer seats and outer head restraints
Model 221.1 without code (224) Design individual rear seats

2 Connect ground line to starter battery and to on-board electrical system battery   AR54.10-P-0003SX
3 Unscrew nuts (2) TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA91.60-P-1006-01L 
4 Detach sidebag unit (1) and disconnect electrical connector (3) from left rear sidebag squib (R12/11) or from right rear sidebag squib (R12/12)    
5 Detach sidebag unit (1) IMPORTANT If the sidebag unit (1) is being replaced, the defective sidebag unit (1) must be properly disposed of.

6 Install in the reverse order    
7.1 Check supplemental restraint system (SRS) with STAR DIAGNOSIS After replacing sidebag unit (1).  
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS Connect STAR DIAGNOSIS and read out fault memory   AD00.00-P-2000-04A
