Function requirements, general

control/warning messages, general

The instrument cluster control/warning messages notify the driver about the current state of the systems installed in the vehicle.

The instrument cluster can issue indicator and warning messages in the following ways:

Visual control/warning messages:

The visual indicator and warning messages are displayed using the following instrument cluster components:

Audible control/warning messages:

The acoustic indicator and warning messages are issued using the following instrument cluster components:

The messages shown on the travel distance display or the multifunction display are shown for a period of t = 5 s, and assigned according to their urgency into two categories:

Messages in category 1 indicate hazardous conditions or situations and they have priority over messages with lower priority.

These messages are automatically stored in the message memory and cannot be confirmed.

For certain category 1 messages a warning message highlighted in red is also issued.

Messages in category 2 can be acknowledged (confirmed). After this the messages are then stored in the message memory.

The messages can all be displayed in the Service menu. The control/warning messages function includes the following subfunctions:

Additional function requirements for ESP indicator/warning messages

Function sequence for ESP indicator/warning messages

If the ESP is switched to passive when the engine is running, the Electronic Stability Program control unit (N30/4) sends corresponding information over the chassis CAN to the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster receives it and actuates the Electronic Stability Program warning lamp (A1e41) permanently.

With model 204 except model 204.077/277/375 the ESP is switched passive as follows:

The front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1) reads in the status of the ESP button over the instrument panel LIN (LIN 1) and sends it over the chassis CAN to the Electronic Stability Program control unit.

It is possible to scroll between the respective menus and submenus via the scroll forward and back button of the (S110s1) left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110). Selection is then made by pressing the OK n/(S110s6).

The request is read in by the steering wheel electronics (N135) and sent over the steering LIN (LIN E1) to the steering column tube module control unit (N80). The steering column tube module control unit routes the request over the chassis CAN to the instrument cluster.

If, when the engine is running, on model 204.077/277/375 the ESP is switched passive by pressing the ESP button (up to 31.5.10) or via the "Assist." menu in the instrument cluster (as of 1.6.10) or the system changes over to "Sport mode", the Electronic Stability Program control unit transmits corresponding information via the chassis CAN to the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster receives this and actuates the Electronic Stability Program warning lamp continuously. In addition the message "ESP-OFF" or "ESP-SPORT" (up to 31.5.10) or "Sport Handling mode" (as of 1.6.10) appears in the multifunction display.

If the Electronic Stability Program control unit detects any faults or malfunctions in the ESP, it sends the corresponding information in the same manner. The instrument cluster receives these, actuates the ESP OFF indicator lamp (A1e30) and issues corresponding messages via the multifunction display.

IMPORTANT The mode change from "ESP-SPORT" (up to 31.5.10) or "Sport Handling Mode" (as of 1.6.10) or "ESP-OFF" into "ESP-ON" is displayed by the message "ESP-ON" in the multifunction display for t = 3 s.

Additional function requirements for ABS indicator/warning messages

(calculated by instrument cluster)

Function sequence for ABS indicator/warning messages

If the Electronic Stability Program control unit detects a malfunction in the ABS, it forwards corresponding data over the chassis-CAN to the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster receives it, actuates the antilock brake system indicator lamp (A1e17) and sends corresponding messages over the travel distance display or the multifunction display.

Additional function requirements for supplemental restraint system control/warning messages

IMPORTANT The circuit 15 status is sent by the electronic ignition lock control unit (N73) over the chassis CAN and interior CAN (CAN B).

Function sequence for control/warning messages for supplemental restraint system

If there is a fault in the supplemental restraint system, the supplemental restraint system control unit (N2/10) sends corresponding data via the chassis CAN to the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster receives this information and actuates the supplemental restraint system indicator lamp (A1e15).

Corresponding messages are also shown on the travel distance display or the multifunction display.

Additional function requirements for PRE-SAFE control/warning messages

If the left front reversible emergency tensioning retractor (A76) or the right front reversible emergency tensioning retractor (A76/1) detects errors in the PRE-SAFE system, they forward corresponding information over the chassis-CAN to the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster receives the information, actuates the supplemental restraint system indicator lamp and sends corresponding messages over the travel distance display or the multifunction display.

Additional function requirements, national seat belt reminder warning

(with code (498) Japan version)

(calculated by instrument cluster)

National seat belt reminder warning function sequence

To display the country-specific seat belt reminder warning, the supplemental restraint system control unit evaluates the signals for the following components:

The supplemental restraint system control unit sends the corresponding signals over the chassis CAN to the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster receives the signals, actuates the seat belt warning lamp (A1e9) accordingly and also issues an acoustic warning "chime".

As from a speed of v > 0 km/h the following acoustic warning phases are initiated:

A loud acoustic warning is issued for maximum t = 93 s at an interval of t = 0.5 s.

The seat belt reminder warning is deactivated, when the seat belt is inserted or, when the vehicle is at a standstill, the driver or front passenger door is opened.

The seat belt reminder warning is activated again under the following circumstances:

The rear seat belt reminder warning is realized through monitoring the number of inserted seat belt buckles in the rear.

If this number changes, a visual and an acoustic warning are issued.

To this end, the rear SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/2) sends the signals from the following components over the interior CAN:

If the seat belt reminder warning was activated while the vehicle was moving, the visual warning will continue to be displayed for another t = 30 s after the vehicle has come to a standstill. This is contingent on a change in the status of the left or right rear door while the vehicle is at a standstill. The status of the rear doors is sent by the rear SAM control unit over the interior CAN.

Additional function requirements for tire pressure loss warning (with code 477) Tire pressure loss warning)

(calculated by instrument cluster)

Function sequence for tire pressure loss warning (with code 477) Tire pressure loss warning)

A pressure loss at one of the tires is recognized by the change in wheel circumference and the associated change in wheel speed.

If the Electronic Stability Program control unit detects a pressure loss on one of the tires, it forwards corresponding data via the chassis-CAN to the instrument cluster.

The instrument cluster reads in this information and shows a "Check tire pressure" message on the travel distance display or the multifunction display.

Additional function requirements for warning messages for tire pressure monitor (with code (470) Tire pressure monitor (base) or with code (475) Tire pressure monitor (Premium))

Function sequence for warning messages for tire pressure monitor

(with code (470) Tire pressure monitor (base) or with code (475) Tire pressure monitor (Premium))

If the tire pressure monitor control unit (N88) detects a pressure loss in a tire or system faults, it transmits corresponding information via the interior CAN (up to 31.5.09) or via chassis CAN (as of 1.6.09) to the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster receives the signals and actuates the tire pressure monitor warning lamp (A1e66).

In addition after switching off circuit 15 the message "Correct the Tire Pressure" appears in the display of travel distance or in the multifunction display.

Function sequence for emergency call system control/warning messages

(with code (359) TELE AID emergency call system)

The vehicle-related services are shown on the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8) and the instrument cluster. If, during a self-test, the emergency call system control unit (N123/4) detects a fault or if the emergency call system is activated, a corresponding message is shown in the travel distance display or in the multifunction display. The required information is sent by the emergency call system control unit over the diagnostic CAN (CAN-D). The front SAM control unit passes this onto the instrument cluster via the body CAN.

Function sequence for ATA control/warning messages (with code (551) Antitheft alarm system (ATA))

The master control unit for the antitheft alarm system is the rear SAM control unit.

To display specific messages the rear SAM control unit sends corresponding information over the interior CAN to the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster then shows it on the travel distance display or the multifunction display.

Additional function requirements for control messages for wiper system (on model 204.2/9)

Function sequence for wiper system control messages (for model 204.2/9)

The active rear wiper interval function is shown as a symbol on the travel distance display or on the multifunction display.

The front SAM control unit sends the "rear wiper interval active" status" over the interior CAN to the instrument cluster.

Additional function requirements for control/warning messages for Keyless Go (with code (889) Keyless Go)

Function sequence for Keyless-Go control/warning messages (with code (889) Keyless Go)

If, during a start attempt, the KEYLESS-GO control unit (N69/5) does not detect a valid transmitter key (A8/1) or if the electronic selector lever module control unit (N15/5) (for transmission 722) does not send the "selector lever position P or N" status, a chime is sounded and a corresponding message is shown on the travel distance display or in the multifunction display. The relevant information for this is sent by the KEYLESS-GO control unit over the interior CAN to the instrument cluster.

Function sequence for memory adjustment control messages (with code (275) Memory package (driver seat, steering column, mirrors))

The instrument cluster outputs an acknowledgment tone when a memory position is stored. To this end, the driver seat control unit (N32/1) or the front passenger seat control unit (N32/2) sends a corresponding request over the interior CAN to the instrument cluster.

Additional function requirements for indicator/warning messages for support systems

Function sequence for indicator/warning messages of support systems

The assist system warning messages function is made up of the following component functions:

D Function sequence for attention assistance system display (model 204.0/2 as of 1.3.11 with code (442) Comfort multifunction steering wheel, model 204.3 with code (442) Comfort multifunction steering wheel)

Function sequence for attention assistance system display (model 204.0/2 as of 1.3.11 with code (442) Comfort multifunction steering wheel, model 204.3 with code (442) Comfort multifunction steering wheel)

By means of evaluating the handling characteristics attention assist monitors the activities of the driver and recognized tiredness occurring or increasing inattentiveness (e.g. on long monotonous trips on freeways and highways).

The driver's individual driving parameters and a warning threshold are determined in the first t = 20 minutes of driving.

If driver fatigue or increasing inattention is recognized, the Electronic Stability Program control unit sends a warning message request through the chassis CAN to the instrument cluster.

The instrument cluster receives this information and then issues a corresponding message over on the multifunction display and actuates the warning buzzer.

Additional function requirements for control/warning messages for CC (with code (440) CC (cruise control))

IMPORTANT The instrument cluster calculates the vehicle speed using the wheel speeds that are sent by the Electronic Stability Program control unit over the chassis CAN. The CDI control unit or the ME-SFI [ME] control unit transmits the status of circuit 61 via chassis CAN.

Function sequence for cruise-control control/warning messages

(with code (440) Cruise control)

The cruise control then regulates the vehicle speed to an adjustable value. The cruise control is activated using the cruise control lever (S40/4). The cruise-control control/warning messages consist of the following subfunctions:

Function sequence for cruise control display

If the cruise control is switched on, the stored speed is shown on vehicles without code (442) Comfort multifunction steering wheel in the travel distance display. On vehicles with code (442) Comfort multifunction steering wheel, the dial scale on the speedometer (A1p8) is shown as a segment ring. The individual segments symbolize various vehicle speed ranges.

The segment ring lights up between the set speed and the maximum speed.

Function sequence for variable speed limiter display

The variable speed limiter governs the vehicle speed to a configurable value that lies between v = 30 km/h and the maximum speed.

When the variable speed limiter is switched on, the adjusted speed on vehicles without code (442) Comfort multifunction steering wheel except model 204.077/277 is displayed in the travel distance display.

On vehicles with code (442) Comfort multifunction steering wheel or on model 204.077/277 the segment ring in the speedometer lights up brightly between the minimum speed and the legal speed limit.

Function sequence for permanent limiter display

The vehicle's maximum speed can be limited permanently on the instrument cluster to a value that lies between v = 160 km/h (e.g. for winter-tire operation) and the maximum speed. If the set speed is dropped below, a warning message is shown in the travel distance display or in the multifunction display.

The permanent limiter can only be switched on and off in the corresponding menu in the instrument cluster.

IMPORTANT If the Electronic Stability Program control unit detects system malfunctions or faults, it forwards corresponding data over the chassis-CAN to the instrument cluster.

The instrument cluster receives this information and shows corresponding messages on the travel distance display or the multifunction display.

Additional function requirements for parking assist control messages (with code (220) PARKTRONIC or code (230) Exclusive parking assist)

Function sequence for parking system control message (with code (220) PARKTRONIC or code (230) Exclusive parking assist)

The parking system uses an ultrasonic measuring system to record the distance from the vehicle to an obstacle, the so-called PARKTRONIC (with code (220) PARKTRONIC).

On vehicles with code (230) Exclusive parking assist, then when driving at speeds of v < 36 km/h, additional longitudinal parking spaces on both sides of the vehicle are measured in the direction of travel. If the parking system records a parking space and the parking procedure is to be conducted, corresponding steering and driving instructions are issued through the multifunction display in instrument cluster.

The exclusive parking assist system builds on the functionality of the PARKTRONIC, but has expanded detection areas. The distance between the vehicle and the obstacle is indicated to the driver visually and acoustically. To this end, the parking system control unit (N62) on vehicles with code (220) PARKTRONIC sends corresponding information over the interior CAN or on vehicles with code (230) Exclusive parking assist over the chassis CAN to the instrument cluster.

Additional function requirements, Distronic control/warning messages (with code (233) DISTRONIC PLUS)

Distronic indicator/warning messages function sequence (with code (233) DISTRONIC PLUS)

The Distronic controls the speed of the vehicle in such a way to maintain a minimum distance from the vehicle ahead. If the Distronic is activated, the stored speed is marked by lighting up of one or two segments in the stored speed area.

If the Distronic recognizes a vehicle ahead, the segment ring in the speedometer lights up brightly between the speed of the vehicle ahead and the stored speed.

In addition, a pursuit diagram is shown in the multifunction display. In this, the one's own vehicle is shown on the right and the vehicle ahead on the left of the image border.

In addition the following information is displayed:

If the vehicle falls short of the safe following distance to the vehicle ahead, the electric DISTRONIC controller unit (A89) sends a corresponding signal via the vehicle dynamics CAN (CAN H) to the video and radar sensor system control unit (N62/2).

The video and radar sensors control unit routes this signal over the chassis CAN to the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster receives this signal, actuates the DISTRONIC warning lamp (A1e59) and the warning buzzer.

Function sequence for automatic lane recognition display (with code (476) Automatic lane recognition)

The automatic lane recognition recognizes when lane marking is driven over and warns the driver in certain situations before the lane is exited.

The multifunction display shows the status and warning readiness of the automatic lane recognition. The multifunction camera (A40/11) sends corresponding information over the chassis CAN to the instrument cluster for this purpose. The instrument cluster receives this data and then issues corresponding messages on the multifunction display.

Function sequence for displaying Active Lane Keeping Assist (with code (238) Active Lane Keeping Assist)

The Active Lane Keeping Assist detects when lane markings are crossed over and warns the driver in certain situations by means of a warning system in the steering wheel when the lane is exited. If the warning proves ineffective, intervention by the brake system is authorized to move the vehicle back into the calculated driving lane.

To this end, the multifunction camera sends corresponding information over the chassis CAN to the video and radar sensor system control unit and forwards it to the instrument cluster. In the instrument cluster the current status and the warning readiness are constantly displayed on the multifunction display.

Function sequence for Speed Limit Assist display (with code (513) Speed Limit Assist)

The Speed Limit Assist records speed limits shown for the stretch driven on by the vehicle.

These are shown on the multifunction display in the form of a traffic sign. The multifunction camera sends corresponding information over the chassis CAN to the instrument cluster for this purpose.

The instrument cluster receives this data and then issues corresponding messages on the multifunction display.

Function sequence for Blind Spot Assist warning messages (with code (234) Blind Spot Assist)

If an intended change of lane is detected (turn signal operation) and the left rear bumper intelligent radar sensor (B29/4) or the right rear bumper intelligent radar sensor (B29/5) at the same times detects another vehicle level with its own vehicle, the right rear bumper intelligent radar sensor sends corresponding information over the chassis CAN to the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster then receives this and actuates the warning buzzer.

Function sequence for Active Blind Spot Assist warning messages (with code (237) Active Blind Spot Assist)

The Active Blind Spot Assist is based on the functionality of the Blind Spot Assist. Active Blind Spot Assist can additionally perform brake system interventions taking the surroundings of the vehicle with the system into account.

Active interventions by the brake system are conducted on a wheel-specific basis and exert a corrective influence on the vehicle with the system.

The video and radar sensor system control unit sends corresponding information over the chassis CAN to the instrument cluster.

The instrument cluster then receives this and actuates the warning buzzer.
