Remove/install airbag unit on the steering wheel - AR91.60-P-0660RA

MODEL 230.4 as of 29.1.08 

MODEL 171.4, 219.3, 230.4 with CODE (809) Model year 2009

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install    
DANGER Risk of injury  caused by performing testing or repair work on airbag or emergency tensioning retractor units. Store airbag units with deployment side facing up; do not expose to temperatures greater than 100°C. When working on these units, disconnect the power supply. AS91.00-Z-0001-01A
NOTES Notes on performing repair, body work and welding on vehicles with airbags and ETR units   AH91.00-P-0002-01M
IMPORTANT Assessment of airbag and belt tensioner units in accident vehicles   AH91.00-P-0006-01B
IMPORTANT Legal regulations on handling and storing airbags and emergency tensioning retractors   AH91.00-P-0004-01A
1 Adjust driver seat and steering column all the way back    
2 Switch off the ignition and remove the transmitter key from the EIS control unit IMPORTANT On vehicles with code (889) Keyless-Go, press KEYLESS-GO start/stop button repeatedly until ignition is switched off. Remove the transmitter key from the vehicle and store it in a location beyond its transmission range (at least 2 meters).  
3 Remove brace cover (9) from steering wheel (2)

4 Insert screwdriver bit into the openings (arrows) at the back of the steering wheel (2) and unscrew the screws out of the driver airbag unit (1) SPECIAL TOOL
IMPORTANT Screws remain on steering wheel (2).

    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA91.60-P-1001-01A 
5 Remove driver airbag unit (1) from steering wheel (2) until electrical connectors (4) are accessible    
6 Separate electrical connectors (4)    
7 Disconnect electrical plug (5). IMPORTANT Pay attention to cable routing in bracket (8).  
8 Disconnect electrical connector (6)    
9 Unclip lock tabs (3) and disconnect electrical connectors (7) SPECIAL TOOL
IMPORTANTInstallation:  The electrical connectors (7) must audibly engage when inserted on driver airbag squib 1 (R12/13) and driver airbag squib 2 (R12/14).

10 Disconnect driver airbag unit (1) from steering wheel (2) IMPORTANT If driver airbag unit (1) is being replaced, the defective driver airbag unit (1) must be properly disposed of. Refer to: Notes on disposing of airbag and emergency tensioning retractor units OS91.00-P-0001-01A
11 Install in the reverse order    
12 Check supplemental restraint system (SRS) with the aid of STAR DIAGNOSIS Only when the driver airbag unit (1) has been replaced.  
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS Connect STAR DIAGNOSIS and read out fault memory   AD00.00-P-2000-04A
