Remove/install airbag unit on the steering wheel - AR91.60-P-0660R

MODEL 230.4 up to 28.1.08 except CODE (809) Model year 2009

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install    
DANGER Risk of injury  caused by performing testing or repair work on airbag or emergency tensioning retractor units. Store airbag units with deployment side facing up; do not expose to temperatures greater than 100°C. When working on these units, disconnect the power supply. AS91.00-Z-0001-01A

IMPORTANT Legal regulations on handling and storing airbags and emergency tensioning retractors   AH91.00-P-0004-01A
1 Switch off the ignition and remove the transmitter key from the EIS control unit IMPORTANT On vehicles with code (889) Keyless Go, press the Keyless Go start/stop button repeatedly until the ignition is switched off. Remove the Keyless Go transmitter card or transmitter key from the vehicle and store beyond the reach of the transmitter (min. 2 m).  
2 Unscrew bolts (arrows) on the left and right of the steering wheel IMPORTANT Hold the driver airbag unit (1). The bolts (arrows) remain on the steering wheel.  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA91.60-P-1001-01A 
3 Lift up the driver airbag unit (1) from the steering wheel, disconnect electrical connector (2) on the driver airbag ignition squib 1 (R12/13) and electrical connector (3) on driver airbag ignition squib 2 (R12/14) SPECIAL TOOL Fig 2
    IMPORTANTInstallation:  The electrical connectors (2, 3) must latch audibly when connecting.  
4 Detach driver airbag unit (1) from the steering wheel IMPORTANTInstallation:  The steering wheel must be replaced after the airbag unit (1)is triggered.

5 Dispose of the driver airbag unit (1) which has been removed Only when replacing the driver airbag unit (1).  
REFER TO FORMS Notes on disposing of airbag and emergency tensioning retractor units   OS91.00-P-0001-01A
6 Install in the reverse order    
7 Check supplemental restraint system (SRS) with the aid of STAR DIAGNOSIS Only when the driver airbag unit (1) has been replaced.  
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS Connect STAR DIAGNOSIS and read out fault memory   AD00.00-P-2000-04A
