The older type carburetor engines not mentioned here are not equipped with the harder valve seat inserts
In principle we do not have any objections to the operation of our gasoline engines with LPG. Obviously we cannot make any recommendations for certain LPG systems or workshops which carry out conversion.
Prior to installing an LPG system the customer must be informed that, in addition to advantages such as more homogenous combustion mixture, less pollutant emission and lower crank assembly wear, disadvantages must also be accepted.
In our experience increased wear of the older type valve seat inserts and moving parts of the mixture preparation system must be expected in pure LPG operation, since the friction-reducing effect of certain gasoline additives is absent. For this reason we are of the opinion that only carburetor engines are suitable for conversion.
On engines without the harder valve seat inserts it is adequate under normal operating conditions to run the vehicle for approx. 100 km with leaded fuel after every 1000 km of LPG operation. This will result in a built-up of wear-reducing lead coating on the valve seats. This is one of the reasons why the popular LPG systems are designed for optional gas and gasoline operations.
If leaded fuel is not available, the valve clearance must be checked at shorter intervals (twice as frequently) and adjusted, if required.
With LPG the engine output is reduced by approx. 10 % and the fuel consumption increases by approx. 10-15 % by volume in comparison to gasoline.
Apart from the above mentioned exception concerning valve clearance adjustment, the maintenance intervals and scope of maintenance remain unchanged. The spark plugs, engine oils and adjusting data must correspond to our specifications.
Perform adjustment work on carburetor only when operating with gasoline.
When performing maintenance and repair on vehicles with LPG system, observe the respective safety regulations in your country. Work on LPG systems may be performed only by trained personnel.
Note that the applicable registration regulations must be observed and that national law may require testing of the converted vehicle.
MB workshops, which convert vehicles, must report the chassis or vehicle ident. end numbers to the responsible warranty departments. If basic deficiencies are detected on an LPG system, which customers may associate with the quality of our vehicles, this must be reported to the VP/SP department for passenger cars or VN/TAK department for commercial vehicles.
Customers must be informed appropriately.
