Location

The DVD player is installed in the rear center console, where it is freely accessible.

Tasks

The DVD player with the integrated audio/video splitter module AVS control unit is the central element for the entertainment system in the rear.

The rear entertainment system is also known as the (RSE = R ear S eat E ntertainment). It allows the rear passenger to use all of the audio and video sources connected to the DVD player while driving, independently of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3), radio and navigation unit (A2/56) or radio (A2) installed in the vehicle.

The user can control the DVD player using the function keys of the left rear display (A40/5) and right rear display (A40/6)) and the rear entertainment remote control (A8/6).

The representation of the user interface with the selection menus is implemented via the left rear display or the right rear display. Different audio and video sources can be used simultaneously via the rear displays.

The DVD player has a single-slot DVD drive. It provides a total of four connection groups for analog audio and video equipment.

Audio and video sources connected to the DVD player can only be controlled via the DVD player. The LVDS (LVDS = L ow-V oltage D ifferential S ignaling) standard is used for audio and video signal transmission between the DVD player and the rear display. LVDS is a standardized copper wire-bound digital transmission procedure that has been specially developed for large volumes of data (such as video signals).

The audio output takes place either over the vehicle speakers by the COMAND operating, display and control unit, for example, or via headphones that the user can plug into the 3.5 mm headphone socket of one of the rear displays. The audio output over the vehicle speakers is controlled exclusively by the COMAND operating, display and control unit, for example.

The DVD player forms the gateway to the telematics CAN for communicating with other control units. All control commands from and to the DVD player are transmitted via this connection.

Diagnosis gateway between CAN-B (Controller Area Network Bus class B (interior)) and the equipment connected to the telematics CAN

Connection detection, i.e. the DVD player detects which connections are occupied
Generating and transmitting information for adjusting DVD settings, pop-up menus and for the specific equipment connected to the DVD player
Controlling the search and function illumination of the individual buttons of the connected equipment in night mode
Anti-theft lock

DVD drive

The DVD drive is a single-slot drive that can handle media with a total capacity of up to 4.7 GB. As well as DVD media, it can also play CD audio media. Audio data in MP3 format can also be played (MP3 CDs and MP3-CD DVDs). CDs and DVDs with the latest copy protection mechanisms and recorded blanks (CD-R/RW; DVD-R/+R/RW) can also be played. The DVD player also processes and displays existing CD text information. The drive has a "DVD Disc Auto Detect" function.

Variants

The variants differ in terms of the number of devices that can be attached and the regional code of the DVD player.
