with CODE (489) Airmatic (air suspension with level adjustment and adaptive damping system ADS) 

with CODE (430) Offroad package 

The vehicle is lowered or raised depending on the ground speed and on the setting of the level control selector wheel and Comfort/ Sport switch (ADS). 5 vehicle level stages are possible:

• Offroad 3 vehicle level
• Offroad 2 vehicle level
• Offroad 1 vehicle level
• Highway vehicle level
• High speed vehicle level

The level adjustment selected by the driver also remains stored after "ignition OFF" until it is changed again manually or it is canceled because a certain speed threshold or time threshold has been exceeded.

Level control selector wheel actuated once in ADS mode "AUTO" (clockwise turn) 

Function requirements: 

• Engine running
• The vehicle is in the highway level (-30 mm).

Function: 

• Shortly after actuating the level control selector wheel once clockwise the vehicle is moved to offroad level 1 (± 0 mm).

  Display in the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster (A1): "vehicle rising", the LED in the level control function indicator flashes during the adjusting procedure. Once the adjustment process has been completed, the lowest LED in the level control function indicator lights up and indicates that the vehicle is in offroad level 1.

• At a velocity of v > 100 km/h (65 mph) for longer than t = 20 s or if the velocity threshold limit v = 115 km/h (70 mph) is exceeded, the "offroad level 1" driver command is canceled and the vehicle is automatically lowered to the highway level (-30 mm).

  Display in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster: "Level selection canceled".

• At a velocity of v > 120 km/h (75 mph) for longer than t = 20 s or if the velocity threshold limit v = 140 km/h (85 mph) is exceeded, the highway level is canceled and the vehicle is automatically lowered to the high speed level (-45 mm).

  Display in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster: "Level selection canceled".

• At v > 140 km/h (85 mph), the vehicle level is automatically lowered to the high speed level (-45 mm).
• At v < 40 km/h (25 mph), the vehicle is moved back to the highway level (-30 mm).

If v > 100 km/h (65 mph) is not exceeded for longer than 20 s, the vehicle will remain at offroad level 1 until it is lowered to highway level again by turning the level control selector wheel counterclockwise.

Level control selector wheel actuated twice in ADS mode "AUTO" (clockwise turn) 

Function requirements: 

• Engine running
• The vehicle is in the highway level (-30 mm).

Function: 

• Shortly after actuating the level control selector wheel twice clockwise the vehicle is moved to offroad level 2 (+50 mm).

  Display in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster: "vehicle rising", the LED in the level control function indicator flashes during the adjusting procedure. Once the adjustment process has been completed, the lowest and middle LEDs in the level control function indicator light up and indicate that the vehicle is in offroad level 2.

• At a velocity of v > 70 km/h (40 mph) for longer than t = 20 s or if the velocity threshold limit v = 90 km/h (55 mph) is exceeded, the "offroad level 2" driver command is canceled and the vehicle is automatically lowered to offroad level 1 (± 0 mm).

  Display in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster: "Level selection canceled".

• At a velocity of v > 100 km/h (65 mph) for longer than t = 20 s or if the velocity threshold limit v = 115 km/h (70 mph) is exceeded, the "offroad level 1" driver command is canceled and the vehicle is automatically lowered to the highway level (-30 mm).

  Display in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster: "Level selection canceled".

Function requirements:

• The vehicle is in the highway level (-30 mm).

Function:

• At a velocity of v > 30 km/h (20 mph), the "offroad level 3" driver command is canceled immediately and the vehicle is automatically lowered to offroad level 2 (+50 mm).

  Display in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster: "Level selection canceled".

• At a velocity of v > 70 km/h (40 mph) for longer than t = 20 s or if the velocity threshold limit v = 90 km/h (55 mph) is exceeded, the "offroad level 2" driver command is canceled and the vehicle is automatically lowered to offroad level 1 (± 0 mm).

  Display in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster: "Level selection canceled".

• At a velocity of v > 100 km/h (65 mph) for longer than t = 20 s or if the velocity threshold limit v = 115 km/h (70 mph) is exceeded, offroad level 1 is canceled and the vehicle is automatically lowered to the highway level (-30 mm).

If v > 30 km/h (20 mph) is not exceeded, the vehicle will remain at offroad level 3 until it is lowered to offroad level 2, offroad level 1 or highway level again by turning the level control selector wheel counterclockwise.

Level control selector wheel actuated in ADS mode "AUTO" (counterclockwise turn) 

Function requirements: 

• Engine running

Function 

The vehicle can be lowered from all offroad levels manually by the driver irrespective of time and velocity thresholds.

Level control selector wheel not actuated in ADS mode "AUTO" 

Function requirements: 

• Engine running
• The vehicle is in the highway level (-30 mm).

Function: 

• At v > 120 km/h (75 mph) for longer than t= 20 s or if the vehicle velocity threshold limit v = 140 km/h (85 mph) is exceeded, the vehicle is automatically lowered to the high speed level (-45 mm).
• At v < 40 km/h (25 mph), the vehicle is automatically moved back to the highway level (-30 mm).

  The high speed level cannot be manually selected, this is only selected upon reaching the vehicle velocity threshold.

Level control selector wheel actuated once in ADS mode "SPORT" (clockwise turn) 

Function requirements: 

• Engine running
• The vehicle is in the high speed level (-45 mm).

Function: 

• Shortly after actuating the level control selector wheel once clockwise the vehicle is moved to offroad level 1 (± 0 mm).

  Display in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster: "vehicle rising", the LED in the level control function indicator flashes during the adjusting procedure. Once the adjustment process has been completed, the lowest LED in the level control function indicator lights up and indicates that the vehicle is in offroad level 1.

• At a velocity of v > 100 km/h (65 mph) for longer than t = 20 s or if the velocity threshold limit v = 115 km/h (70 mph) is exceeded, the "offroad level 1" driver command is canceled and the vehicle is automatically lowered to the high speed level (-45 mm).

Level control selector wheel not actuated in ADS mode "SPORT" 

Function requirements: 

• Engine running

Function: 

• The vehicle remains in high speed level if when driving straight ahead the ADS mode "SPORT" setting is selected.

Level control selector wheel actuated once in ADS mode "COMFORT" (clockwise turn) 

Function requirements: 

• Engine running
• The vehicle is in the highway level (-30 mm).

Function: 

• Shortly after actuating the level control selector wheel clockwise the vehicle is moved to offroad level 1 (± 0 mm).

  Display in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster: "vehicle rising", the LED in the level control function indicator flashes during the adjusting procedure. When this is completed, the lowest LED in the level control function indicator lights up, the vehicle is in offroad level 1.

• At a velocity of v > 100 km/h (65 mph) for longer than t = 20 s or if the velocity threshold limit v = 115 km/h (70 mph) is exceeded, offroad level 1 is canceled and the vehicle is lowered to the highway level (-30 mm).

  Display in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster: "Level selection canceled".

• At a velocity of v > 160 km/h for longer than t = 20 s or if the velocity threshold limit v = 180 km/h (110 mph) is exceeded, the highway level is canceled and the vehicle is automatically lowered to the high speed level (-45 mm).

  Display in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster: "Level selection canceled".

• At v < 40 km/h (25 mph), the vehicle is moved back to the highway level (-30 mm).
• If v > 100 km/h (65 mph) is not exceeded for longer than 20 s, the vehicle will remain at offroad level 1 until it is lowered to highway level again by turning the level control selector wheel counterclockwise.

Function requirements: 

• Engine running
• The vehicle is in the highway level (-30 mm).

Function:

  If v > 30 km/h (20 mph) is not exceeded, the vehicle will remain at offroad level 3 until it is lowered to offroad level 2, offroad level 1 or highway level again by turning the level control selector wheel counterclockwise.

Function

Function requirements: 

• Engine running
• The vehicle is in the highway level (-30 mm).

Function: 

• At a velocity of v > 160 km/h for longer than t = 20 s or if the velocity threshold limit v = 180 km/h (110 mph) is exceeded, the highway level is canceled and the vehicle is automatically lowered to the high speed level (-45 mm).
• At v < 40 km/h (25 mph), the vehicle is automatically moved back to the highway level (-30 mm).

  The high speed level cannot be manually selected, this is only selected upon reaching the vehicle velocity threshold.

Trailer operation 

Function requirements: 

• Engine running
• Trailer operation detected by AIRmatic control unit (N51)

Function 

A trailer mode has been detected and this in turn influences the AIRmatic system as follows:

1. Vehicle runs at highway level only.
2. High speed level no longer accessible.
3. If the driver fails to lower the vehicle manually, the vehicle is automatically lowered to the highway level at 8 km/h (5 mph) or lower.

The trailer can only be unhitched from the vehicle when the AIRmatic control unit is active. This is not necessary for a trailer with low tongue weight capacity.

Comfort/Sport switch (ADS) 

The driver can program the damping level as desired using the Comfort/Sport switch (ADS):

1. "AUTO"  Skyhook mode
2. "SPORT"  Firm damping
3. "COMFORT"  Soft damping

If the driver command "SPORT" is selected, and if the level adjustment high switch is not actuated the vehicle is lowered automatically to the high speed level.
