AIRmatic level adjustment, function - GF32.22-P-4004GZE
MODEL 164.1 with CODE (489) Airmatic (air suspension with level adjustment and adaptive damping system ADS) with CODE (430) Offroad package except CODE (494) USA version up to Model Year 8
The vehicle is raised or lowered depending on the ground speed and setting of the level adjustment high switch, level adjustment low switch and the Comfort/Sport switch (ADS). 5 vehicle level stages are possible:
- Offroad 3 vehicle level
- Offroad 2 vehicle level
- Offroad 1 vehicle level
- Highway vehicle level
- High speed vehicle level
The switch position operated by the driver also remains stored after "ignition OFF" until it is changed again manually or is canceled due to exceeding a certain speed threshold or time threshold.
Level adjustment high switch actuated once in ADS mode "AUTO"
Function requirements:
- Engine running
- The vehicle is in the highway level (-30 mm).
Function:
- Shortly after pressing the level adjustment high switch once the vehicle is moved to offroad level 1 (±0 mm).
Display in the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster (A1): "vehicle rising", the LED in the level control function indicator flashes during the adjusting procedure. Once the adjustment process has been completed, the lowest LED in the level control function indicator lights up and indicates that the vehicle is in offroad level 1.
- At a velocity of v > 100 km/h for longer than t = 20 s or if the velocity threshold limit v = 115 km/h is exceeded, the driver command "Offroad level 1" is canceled and the vehicle is automatically lowered to the highway level (-30 mm).
Display in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster: "Level selection canceled".
- At a velocity of v > 120 km/h for longer than t = 20 s or if the velocity threshold limit v = 140 km/h is exceeded, the highway level is canceled and the vehicle is automatically lowered to the high speed level (-45 mm).
Display in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster: "Level selection canceled".
- At v > 140 km/h automatic lowering of the vehicle level to the high speed level (-45 mm).
- At v < 40 km/h vehicle level is reset to highway level (-30 mm).
If v > 100 km/h is not exceeded for longer than 20 s, the vehicle will remain in offroad level 1 until it is lowered to highway level again by pressing the level adjustment low switch.

Function requirements:
- Engine running
- The vehicle is in the highway level (-30 mm).
Function:
- Shortly after pressing the level adjustment high switch twice the vehicle is moved to offroad level 2 (+50 mm).
Display in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster: "vehicle rising", the LED in the level control function indicator flashes during the adjusting procedure. Once the adjustment process has been completed, the lowest and middle LEDs in the level control function indicator light up and indicate that the vehicle is in offroad level 2.
- At a velocity of v > 70 km/h for longer than t = 20 s or if the velocity threshold limit v = 90 km/h is exceeded, the driver command "Offroad level 2" is canceled and the vehicle is automatically lowered to offroad level 1 (±0 mm).
Display in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster: "Level selection canceled".

Once the adjustment process has been completed, the lowest and middle and uppermost LEDs in the level control function indicator light up and indicate that the vehicle is in offroad level 3.
- At a velocity of v > 30 km/h the driver command "Offroad level 3" is immediately canceled and the vehicle automatically lowered to offroad level 2 (+50 mm).

Level adjustment low switch not actuated in ADS mode "AUTO"
Function requirements:

Function
The vehicle can be lowered from all offroad levels manually by the driver irrespective of time and velocity thresholds.
Level adjustment high switch or level adjustment low switch not actuated in ADS mode "AUTO"
Function requirements:
- Engine running
- The vehicle is in the highway level (-30 mm).
Function:
- At v > 120 km/h for longer than t= 20 s or if the vehicle velocity threshold limit v = 140 km/h is exceeded the vehicle is automatically lowered to the high speed level (-45 mm).
- At v < 40 km/h vehicle level is automatically reset to highway level (-30 mm).
The high speed level cannot be manually selected, this is only selected upon reaching the vehicle velocity threshold.
Level adjustment high switch actuated once in ADS mode "SPORT"
Function requirements:
- Engine running
- The vehicle is in the high speed level (-45 mm).
Function:
- Shortly after pressing the level adjustment high switch once the vehicle is moved to offroad level 1 (±0 mm).
Display in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster: "vehicle rising", the LED in the level control function indicator flashes during the adjusting procedure. Once the adjustment process has been completed, the lowest LED in the level control function indicator lights up and indicates that the vehicle is in offroad level 1.

Function requirements:
- Engine running
- The vehicle is in the highway level (-30 mm).
Function:
- Shortly after the level adjustment high switch is pressed, the vehicle is moved to the offroad level 1 (±0 mm).
Display in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster: "vehicle rising", the LED in the level control function indicator flashes during the adjusting procedure. When this is completed, the lowest LED in the level control function indicator lights up, the vehicle is in offroad level 1.
- At a velocity of v > 100 km/h for longer than t = 20 s or if the velocity threshold limit v = 115 km/h is exceeded, offroad level 1 is canceled and the vehicle is lowered to the highway level (-30 mm).

- At a velocity of v > 160 km/h for longer than t = 20 s or if the velocity threshold limit v = 180 km/h is exceeded, the driver command "Highway level" is canceled and the vehicle is automatically lowered to the high speed level (-45 mm).

- At v < 40 km/h vehicle level is reset to highway level (-30 mm).

Function requirements:

- The vehicle is in the highway level (-30 mm).
Function:
- At a velocity of v > 160 km/h for longer than t = 20 s or if the velocity threshold limit v = 180 km/h is exceeded, the "highway level" driver command is canceled and the vehicle is automatically lowered to the high speed level (-45 mm).
- At v < 40 km/h vehicle level is automatically reset to highway level (-30 mm).
The high speed level cannot be manually selected, this is only selected upon reaching the vehicle velocity threshold.
Trailer operation
Function requirements:
- Engine running
- Trailer operation detected by AIRmatic control unit (N51)
Function
A trailer mode has been detected and this in turn influences the AIRmatic with ADS system as follows:
- Vehicle runs at highway level only.
- High speed level no longer accessible.
- If the driver fails to lower the vehicle manually, the vehicle is automatically lowered as from 8 km/h to the highway level.
The trailer can only be unhitched from the vehicle when the AIRmatic control unit is active. This is not necessary for a trailer with low tongue weight capacity.
Comfort/Sport switch (ADS)
The driver can program the damping level as desired using the Comfort/Sport switch (ADS):
- "AUTO" Skyhook mode
- "SPORT" Firm damping
- "COMFORT" Soft damping
If the driver command "SPORT" is selected, and if the level adjustment high switch is not actuated the vehicle is lowered automatically to the high speed level.
