- Risk of fire and explosion caused by machining/treating magnesium components.
- Moreover during the mechanical processing with coolant lubricants mixed with water there is the danger of hydrogen occurring which represents an additional risk of explosion (oxyhydrogen gas).
- Magnesium chips or dust mixed with oxygen has a tendency to burn or explode.

Safety precautions/instructions
- During machining/treating work do not smoke, stay away from ignition sources and open flames.
- Store and transport magnesium chips only in dry, tightly sealed containers.
These containers must be stored in a cool place.
Fire protective measures, suitable fire extinguishing agents are:
- Fire class D extinguishers (with powder nozzle), dry extinguishing blankets or dry sand.
On no account should the following be used:
fire classification A, B, C fire extinguishers, water, carbon dioxide (CO2
) or nitrogen.
